No. 5 Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 6 Southern Virginia

The Ducks topped Southern Virginia in three sets Friday night at Canavan Arena.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 5, 2019)  – Junior David Lehman registered a team-high 13 kills as the fifth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team swept No. 6 Southern Virginia University (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) Friday evening at Canavan Arena. 

Senior Cooper Diamond recorded a .875 hitting percentage, delivering seven kills on eight attempts with no errors. The Ducks improved to 24-4 on the year.

The Knights were led by Nahuel Recabarren with 15 kills. Southern Virginia fell to 21-3 this season. 

Volleys and Points
  • Paul Clark delivered back-to-back kill to give the Knights a 4-2 lead to begin the set. 
  • The Ducks then took a 9-7 lead after sophomore Ryan Byrne and Diamond set down passes from junior Grant Burden
  • Another kill from Clark tied the set at nine. 
  • Byrne collected two kills and Lehman added another to put Stevens up 12-9. 
  • The Knights tied the set again following a service error by the Ducks, a kill by Recabarren and an ace by Kaipo Tagaloa. 
  • Two kills by sophomore Jack Bittker gave Stevens a 16-13 advantage. 
  • A kill by Recabarren and a block by Clark brought SVU within one point. 
  • Kills from Diamond and Bittker gave the Ducks a three-point lead. 
  • Following a service error by Stevens, junior Jonathan Frenzel set down a pass from Burden before collecting a block with his setter to end the first set. 
  • The teams traded points to begin set two before the Knight scored three-straight to take a 7-6 lead. 
  • Lehman delivered a kill to tie the set, but a kill by Mark Stapley and a Ducks' error kept SVU in the lead. 
  • A 5-0 run by Stevens that included kills from Lehman and Bittker along with an ace from Diamond put the Ducks up 16-11.
  • Recabarren and Clark each set down a pass to cut the lead to three. 
  • Byrne collected a kill and the Knights committed an error to extend Stevens' lead to five.
  • Bittker delivered a kill to win the second set. 
  • Stevens opened the final set with a 6-3 lead before Recabarren and Stapley each tallied a kill to cut the lead to one. 
  • The Ducks were able to extend their lead to five when Diamond set down a Burden pass before Recabarren committed an error.
  • One kill apiece from Colby Wilson and Tagaloa brought the Knights back within three. 
  • Lehman collected another kill to give Stevens a 22-18 lead. 

Match Point
  • Frenzel set down a pass from Burden to end the match. 

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks outhit SVU .487 to .229.
  • In set one, Stevens registered a .615 hitting percentage. 
  • Burden and Tagaloa each recorded 38 assists. 
  • Frenzel led all players with three blocks. 
  • Senior Joshua Hinton collected a match-high 12 digs.
