AMHERST, MASS. (May 10, 2019) – No. 32 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Tennis rolled in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday. Stevens defeated University of Massachusetts Boston 5-0 Bay Road Tennis Club setting up a rematch with No. 15 University of Mary Washington in second round action of the NCAA tournament. The Beacons came to play but the Ducks were able to keep their composure and complete some incredible comebacks in doubles to have a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles competition. Stevens was missing one of their key players in sophomore
Bryan Szayna but the depth of the Ducks roster shined against UMass-Boston.
"Today was a tremendous team effort in pulling out the doubles sweep en route to the clinch. We were down in all three spots including a 6-1 deficit at 1
st doubles," expressed Head Coach
Steve Gachko. "Our guys maintained their composure and never stopped competing regardless of the score. We will need to do a better job against Mary Washington tomorrow and if we stay disciplined and stick to our plan, we will put ourselves in good position to take a doubles lead."
The sophomore duo of
Keegan Morris and
Gabriel Sifuentes got Stevens on the board first thanks to a solid 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Ray Platteel / Roy Platteel. Freshman
Marc Feliu Gomez was paired with Sophomore
Mark Kanevsky at No. 1 doubles and were able to shake off a slow start to secure an 8-6 win. The freshman pairing of
Mark-Jonathan Pabalan and
Garrett Kincaid gritted out an 8-7 win in the third doubles flight over Onkgopotse Mokoka / Alexander Comerchero to complete the doubles sweep.
Stevens wasted no time in the singles competition to secure the match over UMass-Boston.
Mark Kanevsky cruised to a straight-set win over Roy Platteel 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and
Gabriel Sifuentes followed suit with an impressive 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles to clinch the match.
Stevens will face a familiar opponent in tomorrow's second round match up in Mary Washington. The Ducks lost to the Eagles back on February 23 but look to flip the result on Saturday. Stevens is currently on a nine-match winning streak and sits at 15-9 on the year, Mary Washington are 22-4 and won the Capital Athletic Championship back on May 4. The second round match up is slated to start at 12:00 PM.
