Thompson’s game-winner propels Field Hockey past Marywood

The Ducks grab their first win of the 2019 season

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (August 31, 2019) – With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, senior Michaela Thompson scored to help give the Stevens Institute of Technology Field Hockey team a 2-1 victory over Marywood University Saturday at Weinberg Turf Field.

Thompson dribbled to the right side and shot into the upper left corner of the goal in the 53rd minute to clinch the first win of the 2019 season for the Ducks. Stevens moved to 1-1 on the year while the Pacers dropped to 0-2.

Brynn Froehlich started the scoring for the Ducks in the ninth minute when she swept in a clean shot from 10 yards out into the left side of the net.

Marywood was able to tie the game in the 39th minute. After a penalty corner from Kenzie Drew, Lindsey Quinn concluded the sequence by finding the back of the net on a tip in off a shot by Heather Forbes.

Turning Point
  • After allowing the game-tying goal in the third quarter, the Ducks came out firing in the fourth.
  • Stevens took five shots in the first sevens minutes of the final stanza, including the eventual game-winner by Thompson. 

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks held a 19-11 advantage in shots as well as a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.
  • The two teams were dead even in penalty corners, each taking eight apiece.
  • Stevens turned it on in the game's final period, holding an 8-2 advantage in shots.
  • Froehlich had a career-high in both shots (6) as well as shots on goal (5) to lead the way for the Ducks.
  • Emily Franco registered four total saves in goal and now has 19 saves in just two games on the year.

Unsung Hero
  • Sophomore Ellie Jenkins was fantastic off the bench, registering a pair of shots, including one on goal, in just 26 minutes of game action.
