HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 11, 2019) – Junior
Cristiano Hocken netted his first multi-goal match in two years to lead No. 19/RV Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer to a 2-0 victory over John Jay College Wednesday in a non-conference fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Despite showing the ability to stretch defenses with his ball control and speed, the New Providence, New Jersey native had been unable to find the back of the net until Wednesday. Hocken successfully converted passes from sophomore
Adam Silva in the 17th and 53rd minutes to spur the Ducks on to their fifth straight victory. Stevens last opened 5-0 in 2008 en route to a trip to the Division III national championship match. The team will have a chance to open 6-0 for the first time in at least the 25 years Saturday evening in Newark. Hocken's last multi-goal performance came against in-state foe, The College of New Jersey on Sept. 6, 2017.
Junior
Aedan Boriotti, the reigning MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week, stopped a pair of shots in the opening half to marshal his third consecutive clean sheet. The Sea Girt, New Jersey native has not allowed a goal over his last 306:33 of action.
Steven Towler finished one save short of matching a career high, stopping eight shots on the night for John Jay, who fell to 1-3. The Bloodhounds have dropped two straight. It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
Stevens immediately went on the attack in the opening minutes, however the team was whistled for an offside 104 seconds into the match. The Ducks peppered Towler with shots during each of their initial trips into the attacking third with sophomore
Sean Masur registering the first chance of the match. Towler punched away Silva's try from the right side of the box and junior
Stephen Johnson's chance drifted to the left of the net to help John Jay avoid further danger.
Hocken broke through in the 17th minute and the Ducks had additional chances in the opening half, however, junior
Jacob Curtis' header rang off the right post and sophomore
Bailey Gano's try was mistimed and hit the crossbar. The Ducks fired off 12 attempts before Samsom Marwieh recorded John Jay's first scoring attempt in the 32nd minute.
With a slim cushion at the intermission, Stevens came out aggressive to open the second half for the second straight match. The Ducks had a pair of scoring chances and earned two corners over their first few possessions before Hocken netted his second of the day in the 53rd minute to provide a cushion.
Prior to the match, both teams paid a moment of silent tribute in honor of the memories of the lives lost during the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Turning Point
- Silva set up Hocken for a picturesque opening strike.
- The second-year midfielder made a well-time run through the left side of the 18-yard box and slid a quick right-footed pass into the high-slot area, where Hocken had an open net to place the goal.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens fired off a season-high 30 shots. It's the most for the team since the Ducks fired off 42 shots against Berkeley College (N.Y.) on Oct. 26, 2016. Silva and Hocken each took a match-high five shots.
- The Ducks sent one-third of their attempts on net, connecting for 10 shots on net. The Bloodhounds sent two of their five attempts on net. It's the second straight match that Stevens had 10 shots on net.
- Stevens earned a season-high nine corners. John Jay took its lone corner in the first half.
- John Jay is the lone opponent on the 2019 schedule from the City University of New York Athletic Conference.
Unsung Hero
- Sophomore Gianni Falvo continues to be a source of frustration for opposing offenses. The Bernardsville, New Jersey native drew his third start of the season and anchored a defensive group that held the opponent to just five shots for the third time in four matches. For the season, Stevens has allowed just 11 shots on goal.
