HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 18, 2019) –
Lynda Farinella found the back of the net for the first time in her career and
Emily Franco posted her first shutout of the season as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team grabbed a thrilling 1-0 victory over Ramapo College Wednesday at DeBaun Athletic Complex.
With just nine minutes left to play, a shot from
Brynn Froehlich deflected off the goalie on the right side of the net perfectly for Farinella to clean up and deposit into the goal.
With the win, Stevens moves to 4-3 on the season while the Roadrunners drop to 3-4.
The Ducks were stellar defensively all game, allowing just six shots on goal. Stevens posted a shutout for the first time since Oct. 27, 2018 when the Ducks defeated The Sage Colleges 3-0.
Turning Point
- At the 51-minute mark of the contest, Stevens was able to earn their fifth penalty corner of the game.
- After the initial pass from Skylar Migliaccio led to the shot from Froehlich, Farinella found the deflected shot at her feet.
- The freshman of South Plainfield, N.J., did not hesitate and fired the ball into the lower-righthand side of the cage off the assist from Froehlich to give the Ducks a lead they would not relinquish.
Inside the Numbers
- The two teams were almost even in many statistical categories, with Ramapo holding a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners and a 6-5 edge in shots.
- Franco was fantastic in net, posting five saves and not allowing a goal. The sophomore from West Chester, Pa., has not allowed a goal in her last 105 minutes of game action.
- Michaela Thompson and Natalie Logan both led the Ducks with two shots apiece.
- The Ducks won their third one-goal contest of the season and are now 9-6 in their last 15 games decided by one score dating back to last season.
Unsung Hero
- Aryana Muscara made a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball. In addition to helping Stevens post their first clean sheet of the year, Muscara also registered a defensive save in the final minute of the first period.
- The sophomore from Freehold, N.J., now has three defensive saves on the year after posting two last season.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz)
- "Today was a gritty win, and I'm glad we were able to put it away. We weathered a lot of storms and the defense did a good job of maintaining the shutout."
- "We'll need to improve in certain areas as we zero in on conference play next week."
