LANCASTER, Pa. (September 18, 2019) – Carl Friedrich snapped a scoreless tie in the final seconds of the 104th minute as No. 13/13 Franklin and Marshall College defeated No. 16/23 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer 1-0 Wednesday evening in a non-conference fixture played on Tylus Field.
Junior
Aedan Boriotti made three saves for the Ducks, who stood toe-to-toe with the nationally-ranked Diplomats, before suffering their first loss of the year. The setback snapped Stevens' season-opening six-match winning streak - the longest for the program since at least 1943. Stevens is 6-1.
Christopher Amoruso made five saves for the Diplomats, who won their fourth straight to improve to 5-1. Franklin & Marshall leads the all-time series 4-2.
A foul was whistled against the Ducks, just outside the 18-yard box. A trio of Diplomats surrounded the ball prior to the game-winning goal. Max Geuder began the play with a brief flick of the ball. Connor Whitacre touched the ball over to a streaking Friedrich, who one-timed the ball into the net for his second game-winning marker in as many matches.
Overtime was needed after a final-second strike in the final moments of regulation was negated by a F&M foul.
Stevens nearly broke through in the 17th minute. Freshman
Bruno Andino and sophomore
Adam Silva each took corners. Amoruso stopped a
Matthew Pinho header near the crossbar to thwart Stevens' best scoring effort of the evening.
