RIVERDALE, N.Y. (September 28, 2019) – Freshman
Bruno Andino netted his first collegiate goal, however Talal Said scored in the 105th minute to send New York University over RV Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer 2-1 in a non-conference fixture played at Gaelic Park.
One match after collecting his first collegiate point, Andino sent a ball on frame in the sixth minute. NYU goalkeeper Nick Vafiadis deflected the ball, however, the ball carried into the left corner of the goal to give the Ducks the early advantage.
Owen Smith knotted the match in the 87th minute with a head off a Sergio Monton corner and Vafiadis made a pair of saves, as the Violets won their third straight to improve to 3-4-1.
Junior
Aedan Boriotti stopped a career-high eight shots for the Ducks, who dropped their second straight in falling to 6-3-1. The game marked Stevens' final non-conference match of the regular season.
The Ducks continued to apply pressure in the final minutes, but Mecadon stuffed sophomore
Jay Poskitt's try in the 86th minute to preserve the victory.
Turning Point
- Monton sparked the NYU offense for the second time, sending a crossing ball down towards the right side of the net.
- Said received the bass and quickly sent the ball into the opposite corner of the net.
Inside the Numbers
- NYU outshot Stevens 22-9, including a 10-3 margin in shots on frame. The Violets pushed the pace in overtime, outshooting the Ducks 9-2 in the extra sessions. Monton led all players with five shots. Stevens' nine attempts marked a season low.
- The teams combined for 14 corners, with the Ducks earning six against NYU's eight.
- Stevens committed a season-low eight fouls.
Unsung Hero
- Boriotti made four of his eight saves in overtime, including a deflection on Stevens Hess' try in the 100th minute to force the second overtime.
