WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (January 11, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team produced a season-high point total and saw 12 different players score at least two points in an 85-54 victory over Wilkes University Saturday at Marts Center.
Stevens started the contest on an 8-0 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from senior
Emily Nunez and sophomore
Jess Broad and did not trail in the contest, leading by as many as 36 points in the fourth quarter after a 3-point bucket by
Keeley Coval.
The Ducks offense was balanced throughout as four of the five starters finished in double figures in points, led by sophomore
Allie Moss who produced 12 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Broad and Nunez each had 11 points in the win while junior
Christina Li added 10.
Macy Berryman led the way for the Wilkes attack offensively scoring 15 points while going 5 for 10 from 3-point-range. Berryman finished the contest with five of the Colonels' seven made 3-pointers in the game.
After taking a 10-point lead into the second quarter, Stevens opened the flood gates with a 19-3 run that saw seven different players score and spanned 7:25 of game action.
Leading by 23 at the half, the Ducks outscored Wilkes 20-10 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 33 and cruised to the win.
Just one game after setting a season-high for margin of victory with a 28-point win over Delaware Valley, the Ducks bested themselves with a 31-point victory, the largest for the program since defeating Alfred University 96-53 on Feb. 9, 2018.
Turning Point
- The Colonels threatened to climb back into the contest when they cut the deficit to 10 points after a made layup by Brenna Babcock with 8:43 to go until halftime.
- Moss, Li and Broad responded immediately, however, knocking down three straight shots on as many possessions to increase the lead to 17.
- After Wilkes answered with a 3-pointer of their own, junior Annetta Panayides produced back-to-back buckets followed up by consecutive shots from beyond the arc by junior Lily Taeuber and sophomore Vanessa Elliott. Stevens' lead did not dip below 20 after that point in the contest.
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks assisted on 24 of their 32 made baskets in the contest. The 24 assists are the most Stevens has had in a game since dishing out 28 assists in a win over Alfred on Feb. 10, 2017.
- Stevens out-rebounded Wilkes 41-32 and was able to turn it into a 17-7 edge in second chance points.
- The Ducks committed a season-low nine turnovers in the contest while forcing the Colonels to commit 14.
- Elliott, Taeuber and sophomore Meghan Douglas all finished just shy of scoring in double figures as Elliott finished with nine while Taeuber and Douglas produced eight apiece.
- Broad and Douglas led Stevens' attack on the glass with seven rebounds each, a new season-high for Douglas.
- The Ducks shot a season-best 49.2 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from 3-point-range while the Colonels shot just 34.6 percent from the field.
- The 3-pointer by Coval in the fourth to extend the lead to 36 were the first points of her collegiate career.
Unsung Hero
- Douglas was extremely efficient in the win, going 4 for 4 from the floor with eight points and seven boards, five of which came on the offensive glass.
