Broad’s Career Night Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to King’s

Sophomore Produces Career-High 14 Rebounds in Loss

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (January 15, 2020) – Sophomore Jess Broad finishes with a season-high 22 points while also pulling down a career-best 14 rebounds to lead the way for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to King's College 89-76 Wednesday night at McGrane Gymnasium.

With the score 63-62 in favor of the Monarchs at the end of the third quarter, King's scored nine of the first 11 points of the fourth quarter and outscored the Ducks 26-14 in the final stanza to hand Stevens their first loss in MAC Freedom play this season.

King's was led offensively by Rebecca Prociak who had a career night of her own, producing 29 points as well as 20 rebounds in the victory. Additionally, the Monarchs had a pair of other players in double figures as Mackenzie Yori finished with 23 points and Samantha Rajza added 19.

Along with Broad, both senior Emily Nunez and junior Christina Li scored in double figures. Nunez finished 4 for 8 from downtown to produce 12 points while Li finished with 10 points to go along with six boards.

Broad, the 2018-19 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, finished with a double-double for the second time in her last three contests and added four assists, a pair of steals and three blocked shots.

The Monarchs came out firing in the opening quarter using a 17-0 run to grab a 22-5 lead with 3:35 left to play in the first. King's was fantastic from downtown in the frame, going 5 for 8 from beyond the arc as well as shooting 45.0 percent from the floor overall.

The Ducks did not waiver, however, bridging the first and second quarters with a 15-0 run highlighted by six points from sophomore Allie Moss to cut the deficit to one with 7:51 remaining in the second.

After King's swelled the lead to six, Stevens was able to score six consecutive points capped off by a jumper from Christina Li to tie the contest for the first time with 0:18 left until halftime.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle as the Monarchs increased the lead to as many as eight points but were unable to pull away as the Ducks went on a quick 12-5 run to close the third and head to the fourth trailing by one.

King's pulled away in the fourth to become the only team in the MAC Freedom to be 3-0 after Wednesday night's results.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Megan Haughey)
  • "I thought we came out a little slow defensively and it took us a bit to get used to the speed with which they were attacking. We fought hard for 40 minutes with energy, fight and passion. I will take that growth as a team over the outcome."
