HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 25, 2020)  – Senior
Dylan Van Sickell posted a key victory over nationally-ranked Da'Mani Burns at 157 to lead No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology to a come-from-behind victory over No. 6 Johnson & Wales University to close out the Stevens Quad Saturday at Canavan Arena.
The 9-2 decision victory was the second for the day for the Little Silver, New Jersey native, as the Ducks rallied from a 15-6 deficit with victories in each of the final four matches, to earn a sweep of their two duals. Earlier in the day, the Ducks posted victories in nine of the 10 weight classes to down Manchester University 47-6, to earn the program's largest margin of victory since Stevens topped Gettysburg College 46-3 in a Centennial Conference dual on Jan. 21, 2017. The Ducks' 21-15 victory over the sixth-ranked Wildcats marked the highest ranked opponent defeated by Stevens since a 20-15 win over then-No. 5 Ithaca on Nov. 14, 2015 at the John Reese Duals.Â
"This afternoon's success was a direct result of wrestling hard and not compromising position," said head coach
Joe Favia. "When we compete our way, with that level of intensity, we yield the appropriate results."
"I am excited for this team to continue down this path," Favia continued. "They are getting stronger as the weeks progress and that's all we are looking for. We will take the night to enjoy this performance, but tomorrow, we start to work towards our next opponent."
Senior
Troy Stanich, junior
Brett Kaliner, graduate student
Thomas Poklikuha and sophomore
Michael Dooley joined Van Sickell in collecting a pair of victories for the Ducks, who saw their dual record improve to 4-5. The Ducks' dual with the Wildcats marked the first dual between the teams since Feb. 16, 2013, while Stevens faced Manchester for the first time. The Spartans dropped all three duals on the day to fall to 4-11, while Johnson & Wales topped both Manchester and No. 9 NYU, before falling to the Ducks, to close out the day 16-6.Â
Senior
Carl Vasti opened scoring against Johnson & Wales, topping Seon Bowker via a 9-2 decision at 174. The Marlboro, New Jersey native pulled away in the final period to earn his second victory of the season to give Stevens an early 3-0 lead after the first bout.Â
The teams alternated victories at 184 and 197, with Dooley again drawing the teams even after a 5-2 victory over No. 4/5 Giovanni Santiago, handing the Johnson & Wales' 197-pounder just his third loss of the season.
The Wildcats scored six points via a forfeit victory by NR/No. 8 Michael DiNardo at heavyweight to take control of the score and spirited decision victories at 125 and 133 gave the visiting team a 15-6 advantage with the heavy portion of Stevens' lineup lurking in the wings.
Stanich began the comeback with a 6-1 decision victory over No. 9/4 Jordan Robinson. Stanich, the second-ranked wrestler at 141 amassed over three minutes of riding time in the victory.
Kaliner followed with a technical fall over Cole DiRico. The victory was Kaliner's 20th of the year and 97th of his career. Each of the West Chester, Pennsylvania native's 20 wins have come with bonus points. Kaliner was leading 28-9 at the time of the third-period stoppage.Â
With his team trailing by a single point, Van Sickell put together a strong performance against Burns to reclaim the lead for the Ducks. Although Van Sickell would prove to be the victor, it was Burns that jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring with a takedown in the opening seconds of the match, only for Van Sickell to escape five seconds later. The early takedown would be the only points Van Sickell conceded during the match.
After avoiding Burns' shoot attempt, Van Sickell quickly turned Burns over to score a takedown of his own to jump in front 3-2. He added two additional points with a nearfall and finished the opening period holding off Burns' escape attempts to earn a 5-2 margin on the scoreboard after and a nearly two-minute riding time advantage.
Van Sickell, the 10th-ranked wrestlerin the country at 157, began the second period from underneath and escaped Burns to earn another point. After the escape, Van Sickell took down Burns with a single leg and maintained control over his opponent over the remaining time in the frame to take an 8-2 lead into the final period with over two-and-a-half minutes of riding time in the bank.Â
In the final period, Van Sickell began on top and quickly thwarted Burns' attempt for an escape. The senior held control of Burns nearly in the center of the mat for almost the entire frame, finishing with 4:35 of riding time to easily earn the additional point in to provide the final margin of victory. The win was the 18th of the year for Van Sickell.
Poklikuha completed the full comeback with a 13-4 major decision over Christian Murphy to secure the victory for Stevens.

Van Sickell earned his seventh pin of the year with a first-period fall over Joel Arney and Poklihua followed with a major decision over Tyler Leonard to give the Ducks a commanding 33-0 lead.
