ST. DAVIDS, Pa. (January 25, 2020) – Freshman
Danielle Cornetta scored a career-high 14 points and went 6 for 9 from the floor to lead the way for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team in a 70-58 defeat against Eastern University Saturday at Eastern University Gymnasium.
Stevens led by seven points in the second half, but the Eagles used an 11-0 run in the third quarter to take a lead they would not relinquish and moved to 4-2 in MAC Freedom competition while the Ducks fell to 2-4.
Four of the five starters for Eastern finished the contest in double figures, including Jaelyn Harris who produced a game-high 20 points and went 7 for 11 from the floor and 4 for 7 from 3-point-range.
For the Ducks, Cornetta was joined in double figures by junior
Annetta Panayides as well as sophomore
Jess Broad who finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Eastern led by as many as six points in the opening quarter, but Stevens was able to close the stanza on a 9-3 run capped off by a 3-pointer from
Emily Nunez to tie the contest at 15 heading into the second.
The Ducks then grabbed the lead in the second quarter for the first time in the game thanks to a pair of free throws by
Christina Li and went ahead again after two more from the charity stripe by
Meghan Douglas.
After the Eagles cut the deficit to one at 24-23 with less than a minute remaining in the half, Broad responded with a 3-point bucket with :32 remaining and Stevens forced a turnover on Eastern's final possession to take a 27-23 lead into the locker room.
It was more of the same from Broad to start the second half as well as she knocked down her second consecutive shot from beyond the arc to give the Ducks a 30-23 lead, their largest of the game.
Trailing 36-30, Eastern began to make its run, rattling off 11 consecutive points to take a four-point edge.
Cornetta was able to keep Stevens in the contest by scoring the last six points of the quarter for the Ducks and keeping the deficit at just three heading into the fourth.
In the final period Stevens was able to cut the deficit to one on a pair of occasions, including 47-46 with just 7:18 left to play.
The Eagles did not let the Ducks get any closer, however, going on a 14-3 run highlighted by eight points from Da'Naziah Brown to grow the lead to double figures for the first time with just 2:47 left to play.
Eastern held on from there and handed Stevens its fourth consecutive defeat.
