HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 31, 2020) – No. 15 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling collected five pins, including four straight, to defeat York College of Pennsylvania 41-10 Friday in a non-conference dual at Canavan Arena.
Freshman
Hunter Gutierrez, senior
Troy Stanich and classmate
Dylan Van Sickell, joined sophomore
Nico Ziccardi and junior
Brett Kaliner in earning falls as the Ducks evened their dual record at 5-5. Including victories in five of the six exhibition matches, Stevens won 13 of the 15 matches on the evening. Tonight's dual was the first meeting between the programs since 2014. York dropped to 8-8.
After a major decision victory at 125 gave York a 4-0 lead, the Ducks reeled off four-straight, first-period pins to take control of the dual, with two of the falls taking place in the first minute of action. Gutierrez began the dominating sequence at 133, collecting his 18th victory of the year after pinning Logan Fox just 51 seconds into the match. The Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey native moved to the top position after reversing Fox's advantage and then turned his York opponent onto his right shoulder for the pin.
Stanich, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 141, followed with his ninth pin of the year, earning the fall over Tyson McDuffy in 96 seconds. Stanich kept McDuffy stretched out on the mat over the first minute of the match before rolling an exhausted McDuffy over to collect the pin.
Kaliner, who continues to occupy the nation's top ranking at 149, continued the run with his team-leading 13th pin of the year, stopping Timmy Sparks in 2:17. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native quickly scored a takedown and mounted Sparks in the center of the mat in taking control of the match. After a restart, Kaliner flipped Sparks onto his stomach and holding the mounted position until the eventual fall.
Van Sickell, ranked ninth at 157, turned in perhaps the most impressive performance of the night, pinning Eric Hutchinson in 19 seconds. Entering the match off a commanding performance over a nationally-ranked opponent in the Ducks' come-from-behind victory over then-No. 6 Johnson & Wales last weekend, Van Sickell attempted a single-leg in the opening seconds, before muscling York's 157-pounder onto his back to score the quick fall. Hutchinson entered the match with just two losses on his resume, with only one coming in dual bouts. The victorious Van Sickell immediately tapped his heart towards the Stevens bench before acknowledging the crowd.
Poklikuha, ranked eighth at 165, had the dual-clinching victory, earning a technical fall over Jesse Rocco. The West Creek, New Jersey native was leading 18-2 at the time of the third-period stoppage that followed a four-point near-fall.
Ziccardi collected the final pin of the evening, stopping Kyle Strazdus in the final period of a spirited bout. Junior
Bruce Parola and sophomore Michael Doley each posted decision victories to round out Stevens' victories in the dual. York's Thomas Tabatneck had a forfeit victory at 285 to account for the final margin of victory.
Earlier in the evening, freshmen
Arjun Khatri,
Trevor Mastorio,
Pasquale Vizzoni and
Stefan Major joined sophomore
Joe Schneider in earning victories in exhibition matches. Major and Vizzoni collected first-period falls, with Vizzoni's fifth career pin beating the first-period buzzer by one second. Schneider scored a technical fall, leading the match 16-0 at the time of the first-period stoppage, while Khatri and Mastorio each earned decision wins. The seven total pins brought Stevens' season count to 88.
