Jess Broad produced 16 points and 11 rebounds for her third career double-double while junior
Annetta Panayides added a career-high 15 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 70-43 victory over Delaware Valley University in the first game of MAC Freedom competition Wednesday inside Canavan Arena.
Leading by eight halfway through the third period, the Ducks rattled off 10 consecutive points to extend the lead to 18 and never looked back en route to their largest victory of the season.
Broad and Panayides were clinical from the floor in the win, combining to shoot 15 for 23 to help Stevens shoot 41.1 percent from the floor as a team. Sophomore
Allie Moss distributed the ball all over the court as well, dishing out a career-high 10 assists to become the first Duck to reach double-digit assists in a game since
Dani Dudek posted 10 assists in a triple-double effort on Jan. 23, 2009.
The Aggies were led offensively by Sarah Wills who finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, all of which came on the defensive glass.
The Ducks played stifling defense throughout as the Aggies to 32.0 percent from the floor and finished with their lowest point total of the year. Stevens has now won their conference opener in seven consecutive seasons dating back to its time in the Empire 8 Conference.
Stevens never trailed in the contest, outscoring DelVal 12-5 to open the contest and taking a six-point lead after the first quarter.
After the Aggies cut the deficit to four in the second period, the Ducks managed to create some separation extend the lead to 15 thanks to a 15-4 run featuring six different players record at least one basket.
Trailing by 12 at the break, DelVal scored six of the first eight points of the second half to cut the deficit to single digits. Stevens responded quickly, however, as sophomore
Vanessa Elliott cashed in five straight points as a part of a 10-0 run to put the contest out of reach.
The Ducks closed the contest with a bang as well, scoring 11 consecutive points holding the Aggies scoreless for the final 4:08 of regulation to seal the victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens got a ton of help off the bench in the win as the Ducks outscored DelVal 35-2 in bench points.
- The Ducks also dominated down low, out-rebounding Delaware Valley 48-33 and holding a 44-20 edge in points in the paint.
- Stevens also held a 19-9 advantage in fast break points and a 14-6 edge in points off turnovers as they forced the Aggies to cough it up 23 times.
- Panayides also added five rebounds to go along with her career-high point total, the most she has had in a contest since she pulled down nine against Pomona-Pitzer on Nov. 24.
- Juniors Lily Taeuber and Christina Li were solid for the Ducks offensively, producing nine and eight points, respectively.
- Broad, the 2019 Empire 8 Rooke of the Year, also added three blocks, a pair of assists and a steal to her final totals.
- The Ducks were efficient offensively, assisting on 22 of their 30 total made baskets.
Unsung Hero
- Coming off the bench, Taeuber finished with nine points, four boards, two steals and two assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor and going 2 for 2 from the free throw line.
