DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (February 1, 2020) – For the second consecutive contest, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team never trailed en route to an 80-48 victory over Delaware Valley University Saturday at James Work Gymnasium.
Sophomores
Allie Moss and
Jess Broad along with freshman
Kaitlyn Rothwell all finished the contest in double figures in scoring to lead the Ducks to their largest victory of the season.
The Aggies were led offensively by Emily Kutskel who scored 16 points and went 8 for 10 from the free throw line.
In the last two contests, Stevens has now led for 38:37 of the 40 minutes of game action and have won back-to-back games for the second time this season.
The Ducks, who came into the matchup ranked 17th in NCAA Division III and first in the MAC Freedom in 3-point field goal percentage, shot 37.0 percent from beyond the arc in the win.
Moss was extremely efficient from the floor, going 6 for 8 from the floor and a perfect 3 for 3 from downtown for a game-high 18 points. Broad, meanwhile, finished with 17 points and nine rebounds and now ranks second in scoring (17.0) and eighth in boards per game (8.5) in conference-only games.
Coming off the bench, Rothwell set a new career-high with 12 points and went 5 for 10 from the floor while also pulling down five boards. In total, 12 of the 13 players who saw action in the contest scored at least one point.
Much like in the victory over FDU-Florham, the Ducks came out of the locker room on fire and scored the first nine points of the contest. After DelVal trimmed the lead down to four and made the score 9-5, Stevens responded with an 11-3 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Broad to take a 22-9 edge heading into the second period.
The second quarter started in similar fashion to the first with the Ducks rattling off eight consecutive points to extend the lead to 22. The 8-0 run to start the quarter was a part of 14 straight points for the Ducks that bridged the first and second quarters and saw five different players put the ball through the hoop.
The Aggies shaved the deficit to 16 halfway through the second but could not get any closer as the Ducks closed the period by scoring 10 of the final 12 points of the quarter to take a 42-18 lead into the locker room.
After trading punches for the majority of the third quarter, Stevens extended the lead once again with nine straight points to close the stanza, highlighted by four points from Moss and two apiece by Broad, Rothwell and junior
Emily Nunez.
The Ducks led by at least 30 points for the entirety of the fourth with their largest lead being stretched to 36 after back-to-back 3-pointers from
Vanessa Elliott and Rothwell. The made shot from beyond the arc was the first made 3-pointer of Rothwell's career.
Freshman
Keeley Coval hit a pair of free throws to give the Ducks a 35-point lead with just 12 seconds left, but the Aggies were able to knock down a 3-point bucket in the final seconds to make the final score 80-48. Regardless, the 32-point victory was the largest for Stevens this season and the most lopsided win since taking home a 43-point win over Alfred University on Feb. 9, 2018.
With the win, the Ducks keep pace in the race for the fourth and final MAC Freedom postseason spot, trailing Eastern University by just one game after narrowly escaping with a 63-59 win over Wilkes University Saturday.
Turning Point
- The Ducks jumped out on top from the start and never looked back, scoring the first nine points of the contest and outscoring DelVal 20-8 in the opening stanza.
- Junior Christina Li started the scoring in the nine-point flurry with a layup and followed it up with the first of her eight assists in the contest on a made 3-pointer from Nunez. She then assisted on another basket, this time a layup by Broad to give the Ducks a seven-point advantage.
- Freshman Danielle Cornetta capped the run by putting in a layup thanks to an assist by Lily Taeuber.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens dominated on the glass in the contest, outrebounding DelVal 52-29. Stevens also pulled down a season-best 26 offensive boards.
- The advantage on the offensive glass was crucial in the victory as the Ducks outscored the Aggies 16-3 in second chance points.
- The Ducks also turned the ball over just 10 times in the game, one shy of a season-best, while forcing 19 turnovers. Stevens cashed in on those opportunities as well, scoring 29 points off turnovers compared to just five from DelVal.
- Li nearly had a triple-double in the victory, producing a career-high eight assists to go along with seven points and seven boards.
- The benches also played a huge factor in the contest with Stevens holding a 30-12 edge in bench points.
- Stevens finished the contest with 80 points, the second-highest point total of the season, while holding DelVal to 48 points, tied for the second-lowest opponent point total of the year.
- As a team, the Ducks shot 47.2 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.
- The Ducks set a new season high in free throw attempts (22) as well as field goal attempts (75).
Unsung Hero
- Freshman Amber Porrett was a steady presence for the Ducks under the basket, pulling down a career-high seven rebounds, four of which came on the offensive glass, while also scoring two points and dishing out a pair of assists.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Megan Haughey)
- "I thought we got a ton out of our bench today. People taking charges, playing feisty defense. They came in and were a spark for us. Amber Porrett was huge with her seven boards and Kaitlyn Rothwell's minutes were focused on the dirty work, defense and boards."
Next Up
- Stevens returns to the court Wednesday when they take on Wilkes University in Hoboken, New Jersey.
- The Ducks will be looking to sweep the season series after defeating the Colonels 85-54 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania earlier this season.
- The contest, which will take place inside Canavan Arena, will have live stats and live video available on StevensDucks.com.
