Men’s Fencing Earns Split at Eric Sollee Invitational

Ducks Knock Off Pair of Teams Receiving Votes in Latest CollegeFencing360.com Poll

WALTHAM, Mass. (February 1, 2020) – Facing off with four teams who received voted in the latest CollegeFencing360.com Top-10 poll and a pair of other squads, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's fencing team went 3-3 in the Eric Sollee Invitational hosted by Brandeis University Saturday.

The Ducks, who received votes themselves and were the second-highest ranked NCAA Division III school in the poll, defeated RV Brown University, RV Brandeis and Haverford University in the event.

Stevens narrowly fell against RV New Jersey Institute of Technology and dropped contests against Massachusetts Institute of Technology and RV Boston College.

In the opening 15-12 loss to NJIT, the Ducks fell from the ranks of the unbeaten and snapped a program record 25-match win streak. The streak shattered the previous school record of 13 consecutive victories set in 2018-19.

Individually, Stevens was led at epee by sophomore Andy Faubert who posted nine victories, at foil by sophomore Logan Rechler who finished with nine wins and at sabre freshman Dylan Woodward who produced eight victories.

The epee squad was fantastic on the day, leading all weapons with a 35-19 overall record while sabre finished 22-32 and foil went 21-33.

vs. NJIT (Loss 15-12)
  • The first loss of the 2019-20 season for the Ducks came at the hands of the Highlanders of NJIT who narrowly edged out the Ducks by three.
  • At epee, Stevens got two wins apiece from sophomore Tom Gana and freshman Patrick Pan as well as one more by sophomore Gabe Toltus for a 5-4 victory.
  • Sophomore Nick Beja and Rechler won a pair of bouts at foil while sophomore Noah Ehrlich added another for a 5-4 win.
  • The sabre squad got lone victories from sophomores Matthew Jacobson and Vaughn Rice in a 7-2 defeat.
vs. Brown (Win 17-10)
  • Faubert and Pan both produced perfect 3-0 records and sophomore Wolfe Crouse added two more for an 8-1 win at epee.
  • At foil, both Beja and Rechler finished 2-1 to lead the way as Stevens narrowly fell 5-4.
  • The Ducks flipped the script at sabre, however, as Woodward picked up two wins and junior Juan Amezquita, sophomore Pablo Amezquita and Rice had one.apiece for a 5-4 win.
vs. Haverford (Win 19-8)
  • The most lopsided victory of the day for the Ducks came against Haverford as Stevens won at all three weapons.
  • Gana, Pan and Toltus won two bouts and freshman Jack Corridon and Faubert grabbed one win each for an 8-1 victory at epee.
  • Rechler posted a perfect 3-0 record while Beja and Ehrlich won one apiece for a 5-4 victory at foil.
  • At sabre, Stevens picked up a 6-3 win thanks to two points apiece from Jacobson and Rice as well as one each by junior Eric Sang and Woodward.
vs. Brandeis (Win 15-12)
  • Perfect 3-0 records from Crouse and Faubert led to a 6-3 victory for the Ducks at epee.
  • Beja and Rechler went 2-1 and junior Ethan Grzeda picked up another in a close 5-4 win at foil.
  • Woodward finished with a pair of wins while the Amezquita brothers had one apiece for a 4-5 defeat at sabre.
vs. MIT (Loss 17-10)
  • Crouse and Faubert teamed up again for two wins apiece while Pan added another for a 5-4 win at epee.
  • The foil squad fell 7-2 after Beja and Grzeda earned one victory each.
  • Rice won two and Woodward won another as a part of a 6-3 defeat at sabre.
vs. Boston College (Loss 22-5)
  • The lone loss at epee for the Ducks came against the Eagles as Stevens got two wins from Faubert and one more from Toltus in a 6-3 loss.
  • For the first time this season, the foil squad was swept in a match as they fell 9-0.
  • Woodward along with Juan Amezquita produced one victory each at sabre in a 7-2 loss.

  • "I was very happy with how hard the guys fought today. Every match was against a tough team, especially the very strong Division I teams, NJIT, BC and Brown.  Coming away with three wins today was a really great effort."
Next Up
  • The Ducks will be at home for the first time this season Sunday, February 9 when they host the MACFA Group "B" Round Robin inside Canavan Arena.
  • The event will start at 10:00 a.m. with the Ducks facing off against Hunter College, Army, Yeshiva University and NJIT.
