Baseball Unable to Hold Early Lead, Falls 6-4 to William Paterson

Freshman Bristow Dazzles in First Career Start

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 22, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team scored four runs in the first three innings but were unable to hold onto the 4-0 lead as they fell 6-4 in 10 innings Saturday against William Paterson at Dobbelaar Field.

Making his first collegiate start, freshman Leo Bristow was fantastic on the hill, throwing 7.0 innings and allowing just three runs while striking out three. Offensively, the Ducks got home runs from juniors Nate Zuckerman and Thomas Paulich as well as an RBI triple from reigning MAC Freedom Player of the Week junior Gannon Kenney-McGowan.

Carson Weis provided the big hit for William Paterson with a solo homer in the top half of the 10th with the scored tied at four. He finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win.

The Pioneers also got a two-out RBI double by Matt Ferrara in the top of the ninth to tie the contest at four.

The Ducks started the scoring in the bottom of the second when Zuckerman lifted a pitch and was able to clear the tall wall in right field to put Stevens on top 1-0. It was Zuckerman's second homer of his career.

The big flies did not stop there as Paulich drilled a pitch over the right center field fence for his third collegiate bomb and put the Ducks up 2-0.

Later in the inning, Kenney-McGowan ripped a bullet over the left fielder's head to register his first career triple and bring home Ryan Finegan, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Kenney-McGowan was brought home one batter later a Chris Silos deposited a single through the right side to make it a 4-0 advantage.

WPU began chipping away at the lead in the fourth. After a hit by pitch, a wild pitch and a single put runners on first and third with nobody out, Bristow traded a run for two outs as he got Steve Yelin to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play.

The Pioneers struck for another run in the fifth as Dan Carter lined a shot over the right center field wall to cut the deficit in half.

Yelin, who finished the day 3 for 4 with a walk and an RBI, then delivered the third run of the contest for WPU with a single down the right field line to bring home Carson Wies.

Neither team scored until the ninth as the Ducks looked like they may be able to escape with a one-run victory.

In the top half of the ninth, William Paterson got the leadoff hitter on via a hit by pitch and moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. After Alex Smith struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning, Ferrara was able to rip a two-strike pitch off the wall in right field and tie the contest.

The Pioneers were able to get to reliever Roy Iversen (2-1) in the 10th and hand him his first loss of the season thanks to Weis's homer and added another on an error to win the game 6-4.

From the Dugout (Head Coach Kristaps Aldins)
  • "It was certainly a tough one today. We were not only one out, but one strike away from getting the win. But you have to give credit to WPU's Ferrara in the ninth for putting a good swing on the baseball with the game on the line."
  • "Leo Bristow pitched a great game and put us in a position to win. We'll take what we can from this one, learn and get ready for another big game tomorrow vs. Rowan."
