Lehman Moves into Top-Five in Career Kills as No. 15 Lancaster Bible Upends No. 3 Men’s Volleyball

Ducks Drop to 7-3 Against Opponents Ranked or Receiving Votes This Season

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 28, 2020) – Senior David Lehman moved into fifth place in program history in career kills after producing 14 kills as the third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team fell 3-0 against No. 15 Lancaster Bible College Friday night inside Canavan Arena.

Lehman now has 1,216 kills in his career and sits just 26 kills away from passing Will Molina for fourth place on the list. The 2019 United Volleyball Conference Player of the Year is also currently first in program history with 3.65 kills per set in his career.

The Chargers won in straight sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 to knock off their second consecutive ranked opponent after defeating No. 14 Juniata College last Saturday. LBC was led offensively by Nate Miller who finished with 16 kills and hit .333 in the contest.

With the loss, Stevens is now 7-3 against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Poll this season and are 13-4 overall.

Lancaster Bible out-hit the Ducks .340 to .198 while also holding a 6-1 edge in blocks.

Volleys and Points
  • Tied at five in the opening set, the Chargers went on a 4-0 run featuring two kills by Miller to take an early lead.
  • Trailing 14-8 in the set, the Ducks got a kill by Lehman and a service ace from Ryan Byrne as a part of a 4-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to two.
  • Stevens then was able to tie the contest after scoring four consecutive points once again halfway through the set thanks to two kills from Lehman as well as a Jonathan Frenzel service ace.
  • After trading points for the next six points, the Ducks took the lead at 20-19 after a Frenzel kill.
  • With the score 21-20 in favor of Stevens, the Chargers closed the set by winning five of the final seven points to grab the 25-23 win.
  • LBC came out of the gates firing in the second set using another early 4-0 run to lead 4-1.
  • Tied 5-5, the Chargers were able to take a five-point lead thanks to an 8-3 run to make the score 13-8.
  • Stevens responded by scoring five of the next seven points to cut the deficit to two.
  • Lancaster Bible was not to be denied, however, as they closed the set scoring five of the final eight points to win 25-21 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Holding a 6-5 lead in the third and final set the Chargers went on a 6-1 run to make the score 12-6.
  • Trailing 15-10, Stevens responded by rattling off five of the next points thanks to a kill and an ace from Lehman as well as a kill from Grant Burden as the Ducks cut the deficit to one.
  • After LBC re-extended the lead to three at 20-17, Stevens scored three straight points after a pair of Charger errors and a service ace by Jack Fyda to tie things up at 20.
  • Tied at 22, LBC ensured the match would not go to a fourth set by scoring two of the final three points in the match to win 25-23.
Match Point
  • The Ducks attempted to fend off a match point at 24-23 in the third set but were unable to do so as Miller put down his 16th kill of the contest.
Inside the Numbers
  • Both teams were extremely efficient in the third set with Lancaster Bible hitting .545 and Stevens producing a .360 attack percentage in the set.
  • Fyda and Jack Bittker finished second and third on the team with six and five kills, respectively. Bittker also led the Ducks with 10 digs for his third match with double-digit digs this season.
  • Stevens finished the contest with five service aces while the Chargers produced three.
  • Kole Horst joined Miller in double-figures in kills for LBC while Zeke Hallman added nine kills and hit .583.
  • Nine different players produced at least one kill in the match for the Ducks.
  • Burden added 22 assists to his ledger this season and now sits in sixth place in program history with 1,677 career assists as he passed Mike Esposito who had 1,666 in his career.
Next Up
  • For the first time in six matches, Stevens will take on a team not ranked or receiving votes in the AVCA Top-15 as they take on St. Joseph's College-Long Island as well as St. Francis College Brooklyn Sunday as a part of the Stevens Tri-Match No. 2 with the first match beginning at 12:00 p.m. and the second starting at 4:00 p.m.
  • The Ducks knocked off St. Joseph's-LI 3-2 last time the two squads met on March 16, 2019 and it is believed to be the first meeting between Stevens and St. Francis Brooklyn.
