HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 1, 2020) – The third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak by sweeping both St. Joseph's College-Long Island and St. Francis Brooklyn Sunday in the Stevens Tri-Match inside Canavan Arena.
The Ducks started the day hiting .345 to sweep St. Joseph's-LI 25-20, 25-16, 25-11 and had 10 different players register a kill in a 25-20, 25-15, 25-21 sweep of St. Francis Brooklyn to move to 15-4 overall on the season. Stevens has now earned a sweep in nine contests on the year.
Junior
Jack Bittker led the way for the Ducks in both contests on the way after producing 10 kills against the Golden Eagles and seven versus the Terriers. Seniors
Ryan Byrne and
David Lehman both added nine kills apiece in the win against St. Joseph's-LI while sophomore
Stedman van Arsdale registered six kills and hit .625 against St. Francis Brooklyn.
Will Flohr led the way for St. Joseph's-LI with seven kills and a .333 attack percentage while St. Francis was led offensively by Johnny Ferraro who produced seven kills of his own.
On the day, the Ducks were phenomenal from the service line with 11 total service aces in the two matches while allowing just one on the defensive end.
Stevens also out-blocked SJC 8-3 while also holding a 10-6 edge in blocks against SFC.
Volleys and Points (Match One)
- SJC started the opening set by winning five of the first six points to take an early lead.
- Trailing 8-4, Stevens responded with a 7-3 run featuring kills by Byrne, Bittker and Jonathan Frenzel to tie the contest at 11.
- With the score 14-12 in favor of the Golden Eagles, the teams traded 3-0 runs to give SJC a 17-15 edge in the set.
- The Ducks ensured they would not drop the set, however, as they scored nine of the final 11 points of the set thanks to kills by Nathan Lancia, Byrne and Grant Burden to win the set 25-20.
- Stevens opened the second set winning the first three points, capped off by a service ace from Byrne.
- Leading 9-6, the Ducks went on another 3-0 run featuring a pair of kills by Byrne to extend the lead to six.
- Holding a 16-10 edge, Stevens rattled off four straight points highlighted by a Louden Moran service ace.
- The two teams traded points back-and-forth for the remainder of the set as Frenzel put down a kill to win the set 25-16.
- The Ducks began the third and final set on a 6-1 run with all six points coming off kills, led by two kills each by Lehman and Bittker.
- With Lehman at the service line, Stevens scored eight consecutive points featuring two Lehman aces and a kill apiece from Lehman, Nathan Lancia and Burden.
- The Ducks put the contest away late by winning four of the final six points of the set to register a 25-11 victory.
Match Point (Match One)
- Stevens took advantage of an error by Paul Curaro to earn the sweep.
Inside the Numbers (Match One)
- Stevens produced five service aces while the Golden Eagles had just one while the Ducks held an 8-3 edge in blocks.
- The Ducks doubled-up St. Joseph's in total kills (43-21) and total assists (40-20) with 38 of those assists coming from Burden.
- Michael Snajder nearly registered double-digit digs in the match with nine while also adding an assist.
- Byrne added eight digs and two blocks to his nine kills while hitting .263 in the match.
- Stevens had a 79.2 side-out percentage while the Golden Eagles sided-out at a 50 percent clip.
- In the third set, Stevens committed just two attack errors while hitting .500 as a team and holding SJC to -.032.
Unsung Hero
- Over the two matches, Lancia registered eight total kills on 14 swings while adding four blocks and four digs.

Next Up
- The Ducks return to the court Saturday as they take on No. 14 Juniata College at 11:00 a.m. and Penn State Altoona as a part of the Juniata Tri-Match in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.
- Stevens has won each of the last seven matches over the Eagles, including a 3-0 victory on April 6, 2019.
- It is believed to be the first meeting between the Ducks and the Lions.
