HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 8, 2020) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team only scored in three innings, but made it count as they put up multiple runs in each en route to a 10-2 victory over SUNY-New Paltz Sunday at Dobbelaar Field.
Junior
Thomas Paulich hit his second home run of the season and finished with four RBI while
Gannon Kenney-McGowan also went deep to help the Ducks score in double figures for the first time this season.
Senior
Chandler Brierley (1-1) picked up the first win of his final collegiate campaign after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out eight.
The middle of the Stevens lineup was firing on all cylinders as the No. 2 through No. 6 hole hitters for the Ducks combined to go 8 for 23 with eight RBI and eight runs scored in the win.
The Ducks started the scoring in the bottom of the first after Paulich was able to single through the right side to bring home
Nate Zuckerman, who drew a leadoff walk to start the game. With two away in the inning, Kenney-McGowan stepped to the plate and lifted a two-run homer over the right field wall to give Stevens a 3-0 lead.
After New Paltz plated a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth to cut the deficit to one, the Ducks responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning.
Chris Silos and
Sutton Dole both singled and Zuckerman drew another walk, one of four in the game for him, to load the bases with two away.
A.J. Falconite then stepped to the plate and ripped a 1-1 pitch through the left side to bring home two and push the lead back to three.
The Hawks decided to make a pitching change prior to the next batter, but it did not work out in their favor as Paulich swung at the first pitch he saw from reliever Mat Triebel and deposited it over the right field fence for a three-run homer to put the contest out of reach.
Stevens was not done, however, as a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Sophomore
Brett Mendez then was able to ground out to the second baseman to bring home Silos and make the score 9-2. A couple of pitches later, Dole capped the scoring for the Ducks as he raced home on a wild pitch.
After Brierley exited following the fifth inning, Stevens got one inning of scoreless relief from
Anthony Pron,
Roy Iversen,
Michael Anthony and
Alex Smith to seal the win.
Inside the Numbers
- Dole and Paulich were the lone Stevens hitters with multi-hit games while Falconite, Tom James, Kenney-McGowan and Silos all had one apiece.
- Zuckerman was unable to produce a hit to snap his six-game hitting streak but did draw four walks and scored a pair of runs for the Ducks.
- The Ducks pitching staff stranded eight runners on base while Stevens left just five on in the contest.
- Brierley set a new season-high with eight strikeouts and is now tied for second in the MAC Freedom with 23 punchouts on the year.
- Stevens swiped four bags on the day, led by Zuckerman with two.
- It is the second time this season the Ducks have had multiple home runs in the same game with the previous contest coming against William Patterson University.
- Stevens turn five double plays defensively, including a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play in the third inning.
From the Dugout (Head Coach Kristaps Aldins)
- "It was nice to get the victory today and take two out of three on the week. We most certainly got the result we wanted and that is something to be very pleased about. The five double plays we turned in the infield definitely played a huge role today."
- "With that being said, the focus for our team right now needs to be on getting better every day. If we can take this mindset heading into this week, I feel like we will hit out stride with this group very soon."
