Men’s Soccer Falls in OT at Misericordia

Goal in first minute overtime sends Cougars over Ducks

DALLAS, Pa. (October 16, 2021)  – Despite outshooting its opponent by a 3-to-1 margin, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team fell to Misericordia University 1-0 in overtime Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup on a soggy Mangelsdorf Field.

As the rain increased after the clock moved into extra time, the hosting Cougars scored just 52 seconds in the first overtime period to win for the fifth time in their last six matches. Alexei King began the winning play with a cross through to the middle of the 18, where Max Gariano snuck through a pair of Duck defenders to head the ball into the center of the goal.

Senior Aedan Boriotti made one save for the Ducks, who dropped their second straight to fall to 7-6-1 on the year and to 2-3 in the MAC Freedom. Andrew Daubenspeck made seven saves for Misericordia, who improved to 9-2 on the year and to 3-1 in league play. Misericordia moved into a four-way tie atop the conference standings with nine points. Stevens sits three points behind the MAC Freedom leaders. Boriotti's save was a nifty snag of Gariano's try in the third minute of action.

Stevens fired off eight shots in the first half and 10 in the second, to hold an 18-6 advantage over Misericordia. Of the Ducks' 18 attempts, seven were on target, with the Cougars only registered a pair of shots on goal. Junior Bruno Andino led both sides with four attempts.

Turning Point
  • Daubenspeck made a splendid save on junior Sean Ryan's scoring try from the center of the 18 to keep the match scoreless.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens held a 2-0 edge in corners. It's the second time this season that the Ducks held an opponent without a corner.
  • Misericordia's six shots matched a season low.

Unsung Hero
  • Senior Matthew Pinho recorded a team save in the 58th minute, clearing out a scoring attempt by Eric Goldberg from just beyond the six-yard box.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan
  • "Disappointing to outshoot another opponent and come away empty handed. We have to regroup and recover to be ready for the last few weeks of the season."
  • "We are looking forward to getting some quality sessions in this coming week. We have a full week to prepare for Wilkes, who are flying at the moment, so we have to be ready for them."

Up Next
  • Men's Soccer welcomes Wilkes to the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Oct. 23.
  • Stevens is 5-0 against Wilkes since 2002, although this will be just the second meeting since 2013.
  • The Colonels are one of the teams tied atop the MAC Freedom standings.
