Barnes, McNeill and Persau Hit Milestones to Lead Women’s Fencing to Perfect Day at Ranger Invitational

Ducks outscore opponents 119-16 on the day

MADISON, N.J. (Oct, 31, 2021) – Senior Kiera Barnes, junior Claire McNeill and senior Sara Persau all reached individual milestones in victories and the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team posted a perfect 5-0 record at the Ranger Fall Invitational – Part I hosted by Drew University Sunday.

The Ducks took down Yeshiva University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Army, Navy, and Rutgers University by a combined score of 119-16 on the day, scoring at least 21 points in every matchup on the day.

Barnes finished the day with a perfect 12-0 record to become just the sixth sabre fencer in program history to surpass 200 career victories. The South Jordan, Utah, native has reached the milestone in less than three competitive intercollegiate seasons and now has 207 wins, needing just 78 more to become the winningest sabre fencer in program history.

McNeill and Persau, meanwhile, both were able to reach the 100-win plateau as McNeill finished 13-1 and Persau went 10-1.

Joining the trio in double-digit wins on the day were Leigha Capra (12-1) and Keira Mizzi (10-3) as 22 different student-athletes produced at least one win in the competition.

The sabre squad led the way for Stevens on the day with an impressive 41-4 record while foil and epee both went 39-6.

Vs. Yeshiva (Win 27-0) Vs. FDU (Win 23-4)
  • The foil squad opened things up against the Devils with a 6-3 win after two wins by Persau and Kubit and one apiece from Isabel Gringeri and McDermott.
  • For the second consecutive bout, the Ducks went a perfect 9-0 at sabre led by 3-0 records from Barnes, Arianna Daringa and Alana Schmitt.
  • Capra and McNeill both went 3-0 while Mizzi finished 2-1 to send epee to an 8-1 win.
Vs. Army (Win 24-3)
  • All three weapons earned 8-1 wins over Army starting with foil thanks to two wins each by Kubit, McDermott and Persau while Brianna Ellis and Elizabeth MacDonald both picked up their first win of the day.
  • Barnes again went 3-0 at sabre, Daringa produced a pair of victories and Gellerstein, Onelli and Schmitt had one win each.
  • At epee, McNeill was 3-0, Mizzi was 2-1, Capra was 2-0 and Victoria Beke went 1-0 to send the Stevens to the 8-1 win.
Vs. Navy (Win 24-3)
  • The Ducks followed up a 24-3 win over a service academy with another 24-3 win over a different service academy against Navy.
  • Foil finished with a perfect 9-0 record with three wins from Sofia Savchuk, two by Persau and Kubit and one each from MacDonald and Ellis.
  • Sabre produced an 7-2 record led by two wins each by Barnes and Schmitt.
  • Capra, McNeill and Mizzi all went 2-0 while Victoria earned a win and Christine Chan produced her first victory of the day to send epee to an 8-1 win.
Vs. Rutgers (Win 21-6)
  • Persau went 3-0, Kubit went 2-0 and McDermott and Gringeri both had one win each as foil closed the day with a 7-2 win.
  • Sabre finished things up with an 8-1 win thanks to wins from Barnes, Chen, Daringa, Gellerstein, Onelli and Schmitt.
  • It was Capra, McNeill and Mizzi once again leading the way at epee as they all went 2-1 as Stevens finished things up with a 6-3 victory.
