DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (October 5, 2021) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team scored five times in the second half to break the match open en route to a 6-0 victory Tuesday in a MAC Freedom match contested Tuesday at Robert A Lipinski Field at James Work Memorial Stadium.
Graduate student
Cristiano Hocken recorded his sixth career brace to lead the offense as five different players scored for the Ducks, who scored six goals in a match for the first time since the 2016 season. The victory moved Stevens to 6-4-1 and evened the Ducks' conference record at 1-1. Quinn McCarty made 10 saves for Delaware Valley, who fell to 4-6 on the year and to 0-2 in MAC Freedom play. The Aggies have dropped two straight. The Ducks have won all three meetings between the programs.
Senior
Adam Silva netted his first goal of the season, as did first-year
Luca Campbell. Senior Brian Paceli registered his first goal as a Duck after scoring once at Saint John's (Minn.) and sophomore
Kevin Lochbihler found the back of the net in his Stevens debut to round out the Ducks' goal scorers.
Graduate student
Aris Costeas earned the victory, while senior
Aedan Boriotti came on late in the second half to preserve the clean sheet. Neither goalkeeper faced a shot as the Ducks held Delaware Valley to just two shots on the day, and none in the first half.
Hocken opened scoring in the 16th minute, taking a beautifully placed long pass from sophomore
Fritz Kabeiseman. Hocken corralled the ball and sent it into the net for his third goal of the year.
After watching McCarty make eight saves to single handedly keep the Aggies in the match, the Ducks wasted little time breaking through in the second half. Campbell netted his first career goal just 59 seconds into the final 45, banging home a Hocken touch pass from the edge of the six-yard box. Hocken would cap off his day by converting a
Bruno Andino feed in the 55th minute for his second goal of the match. Hocken's five-point performance moved the New Providence, New Jersey native into second place in the MAC Freedom with 1.22 points per match.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot Delaware Valley 28-2, including a 16-0 margin in the first half. Over half of the Ducks' 28 shots (17) registered on-goal, while neither of the Aggies' attempts were on frame.
- The Ducks earned a season-high 11 corner kicks, while Delaware Valley did not earn any. It marked the first time Stevens held an opponent without a corner since keeping Nazareth off the board in the Empire 8 Conference championship in 2018.
- Senior Jon Valcarce assisted on Lochbihler's tally in the 78th minute for his first point of the season.
- Junior Michael Gomez assisted on Silva's marker in the 61st minute for his first collegiate point.
- The six goals mark the most for the program since Oct. 26, 2016, where the Ducks defeated the Knights 16-1.
Unsung Hero
- Graduate student John Caracappa fired three of his four shots on goal, while playing a team-leading 76 minutes.
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan
- "Good to get back to winning ways; the guys wanted to rebound after last Saturday's disappointment!"
- "Delaware Valley posed some difficult defensive tactics, which caused us some difficulties in the first half. The guys remained patient and they continued to play our brand of football."
- "Happy to utilize the full extent of our squad. It gives the coaching staff some selection problems for next Saturday. We have an extremely difficult away trip on Saturday against King's and we need to be well prepared for that game."
