HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 8, 2021)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team announced its 2021-22 competition schedule Friday. The calendar features 12 dual meets, including one at Canavan Arena, where the Ducks are 42-12 since 2010 and culminates with the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship in January and the Southeast Regional in February, in preparation for the national championship tournament. Additionally, the dual schedule is highlighted by matchups with three Division I opponents in Lock Haven, Clarion and Cornell, with two of the matchups (Lock Haven and Clarion) taking place at December's Messiah Duals.
"We are excited to release a full slate of teams and get back on the horse," said head coach
Joe Favia. "The goal is to pick up right where we left off, competing with the best in the country. We have some real highlights on the schedule, and I know the guys can't wait to be back in front of our fans!"
The first dual of the season is on Nov. 13, when the Ducks host Muhlenberg College at 11:30 in the lone campus dual of the year. The Ducks have won 11 straight meetings with the Mules and the November matchup will mark the third straight in Hoboken, where the Ducks' average margin of victory has been 11 points.
The season unofficially gets underway on Oct. 30, when the annual Wrestle-Offs take place inside Canavan Arena. The Ducks make their first of two trips to Ithaca New York on Nov. 5 to officially open the season with the two-day Ithaca Invitational. The Roger Williams Invitational follows on Nov. 13 before the Ducks return home to host Muhlenberg.
Stevens heads west for the week of Thanksgiving for the CUW Open, hosted by Concordia-Wisconsin on Nov. 20, before travelling to Minnesota for a triangular with Wisconsin-Eau Claire and perennial national power Augsburg. It will be the first meeting with each program. Augsburg has won three team national championships since 2010 and boasts 50 NCAA All-Americans and 13 NWCA All-Americans over the same span.
York College's New Standard Corporation Invitational follows on Dec. 3-4, before the Ducks return to Keystone state for the Messiah Duals. Stevens will take on the hosting Falcons, along with Lock Haven and Clarion in the first duals with a Division I opponent since facing Rutgers University on Nov. 2, 2014. It will be the first meeting with both Lock Haven and Clarion.
The second half of the schedule begins on Jan. 5 with a dual against in-state rival, The College of New Jersey on Jan. 5 at Southern Regional High School in Stafford Township, New Jersey. The annual meeting between the schools is always a highly anticipated dual with each side winning two of the last four meetings.Â
Championship season begins on Jan. 15 with the conference championship tournament, which will be hosted by Messiah. The Ducks have won six straight conference titles, bridging the program's time between the Centennial Conference and the MAC. Stevens won conference crowns in six weight classes and captured 11 medals in 2020 en route to an eight-and-a-half point victory over Messiah. The league did not conduct a conference championship tournament in 2021.Â
Dual season continues on Jan 21, when the Ducks head to Kings Point, New York to take on the Merchant Marine Academy. Formerly annual opponents in the Centennial Conference, the Ducks have won the last four meetings between the programs, including a 24-21 decision on Jan. 22, 2019 in the last meeting between the teams.
January's Wildcat Open, hosted by Johnson & Wales University, is the next-to-last open tournament for the program, before the Ducks return to Ithaca on Jan. 29 for duals with the hosting Bombers and Cornell University. The Ducks will be facing the Ivy League school for the first time and will face the Bombers in their on-campus venue for the first time since 2012.
The calendar then turns to February as the Ducks head to New York City for the annual meeting with Hudson River rival, NYU on Feb 2. The Ducks have won four of the last five meetings between the programs. The Messiah Open on Feb. 5 is the last open tournament of the year before the Ducks close out the dual season against York on Feb 12. The contest against the Spartans will be the first meeting between the teams in York.
The postseason begins with the Futures Tournament, hosted by Muhlenberg on Feb. 20 before the Ducks compete in the Southeast Regional Championship on Feb.25-26. The Ducks will be in search of their third overall, and second straight, regional title after amassing four individual titles in 2020 en route to a commanding 33.5 point-victory.
The 2021 NCAA Division III Championship is set to take place Mar. 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
