Women’s Basketball Downs TCNJ 71-65 for Third Straight Win

Hot shooting and tight defense help Ducks hold off Lions

EWING, N.J. (November 17, 2021)  – Senior Jess Broad led four student-athletes in double figures with 18 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated The College of New Jersey 71-65 Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at Packer Hall.

Senior Vanessa Elliott and Allie Moss each had 11 for the Ducks, who opened a double-digit lead in the first quarter and then made seven of eight free throws in the final 16 seconds to win their third straight in moving to 3-1 on the season.

Sophomore Elissa Nsenkyire came off the bench and provided an offensive spark, finishing 4 for 5 from the floor, to finish with a career-high nine points. Senior Keeley Coval also provided a lift of the bench, scoring five points and pulling down three rebounds.

Julia Setaro scored a game-high 20 points and Nikki Alexatos came off the bench to add 16 for the Lions, who dropped to 0-3.

The Ducks jumped out to an early lead courtesy of strong defense and a crafty midrange game. Stevens allowed just one field goal in the first five minutes of action, while five different student-athletes: junior Danielle Cornetta, Broad, Elliott, Nsenkyire and Moss each hit a short jumper to help the Ducks build an early lead.

Each of TCNJ's three first-quarter field goals were from behind the arc and the Lions didn't connect for their first basket from inside the 3-point line until the latter stages of the second quarter (2:03 remaining).

While Stevens kept TCNJ from generating any midrange or post offense, the Ducks were able to control play with a varied offense, scoring on an array of jump shots, long-range baskets and layups to pad its lead. Stevens built as much as a 17-point lead after a short jumper by Nsenkyire only to see TCNJ rally to pull within 10 at halftime.

Elliott kicked off the second half with her third 3-pointer of the contest as Stevens reclaimed a comfortable margin. The Lions clawed their way back into the game with a 12-2 run in the fourth quarter, but Douglas and Broad had the two biggest baskets of the contest, scoring consecutive baskets in a minute span, right after TCNJ had taken a two-point lead.

Pivotal Point
  • After TCNJ drew even at 62 with just over a minute to play, Coval provided a nifty pass to senior Meghan Douglas for a layup that put the Ducks back in front for good.
  • On the ensuing possession, Broad blocked a three-point attempt from Emily Toy.

  • The Ducks finished 14 for 20 from the line, matching the team's best performance of the season.
