MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (November 24, 2021)  – Graduate student
Brett Kaliner scored a pair of bonus-point victories to lead No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology of Wrestling in a triangular dual with No. 4 Augsburg University and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Wednesday. The event was hosted by Augsburg in Si Melby Hall.
Stevens fell to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 27-19 in the opener, before falling to the Auggies 23-19. Augsburg topped the Blugolds 18-15 to round out the competition. Stevens dropped to 0-2 on the year, while Augsburg improved to 2-0. Wisconsin-Eau Claire finished the day with a 2-2 record. It is believed to be Stevens' first dual against both schools.
Kaliner, ranked No. 1 at 149, was one of three Ducks to score a pair of victories on the day. He began his day with a tech fall over the Blugolds' No. 13 Jake Drexler, earning the stoppage in the third period after reaching a 20-4 advantage. Drexler entered the contest with a 10-5 record. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native closed out his day with a second tech fall, defeating Augsburg's Charlie Stuhl 23-8, after the riding time point was added to the score. The two victories improved Kaliner's record to 11-0.
No. 3
Kyle Slendorn pinned Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Gabriel Pugh in the second period for his 11th victory of the season. Pugh entered the match with an 11-4 record. The Howell, New Jersey native earned his second win of the day with a 14-4 major decision over the Auggies' Brady Gross. Slendorn closed the afternoon with a 12-1 record.
No. 7
Michael Dooley was the final Duck to finish with two victories, adding a major decision and a decision to his season totals. Dooley opened with a 10-0 shutout of the Blugolds' Jackson Schichel, who was making his season debut. The Hillsborough, New Jersey native then battled Augsburg's Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann for three periods, before coming on the right side of an 8-4 score.Â
"Eye-opening experience for our team these past few days," said assistant coach
Anthony Bonaventura. "It was a no-brainer to get this trip on our schedule. Not the results we wanted today, but we will always seek challenges to better prepare us for March."
"Just could not get momentum on our side today," Bonaventura continued. "We definitely had some bright spots; Slendorn and Kaliner continue to show they're one of the best 1-2 punches in the country. Overall, it was a beneficial trip and we will learn from our setbacks. Our goals and mindset will not waver. We are excited to get back to work after Thanksgiving break."
No. 15
Hunter Gutierrez split a pair of matches at 157, earning a major decision over Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Adam Reints via a 10-2 margin. The Lacey Township, New Jersey native then fell to Augsburg's Tyler Shilson via an 18-4 score.
First-year
Harrison Hinojosa went 1-1 at 165. The Haddon Township, New Jersey native fell via a 7-1 score to the Blugolds' seventh-ranked Chase Schmidt, before rallying for his 12th win of the year with a 6-3 decision over Augsburg's Matt Rogge.
Sophomore
Luke Hoerle was the final Duck to earn a victory on the day, scoring an 11-3 major over Augsburg's Kieler Carlson. Hoerle dropped his earlier match to Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Javon Taschuk by fall.
After falling behind 9-0 to Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the first dual of the day, the Ducks rallied with three straight victories to take a 15-9 lead. Slendorn's pin of Pugh was the Ducks' first win of the day, which was followed by Kaliner's first tech fall and Gutierrez's major. The Blugolds won each of the next three matches to take a 21-15 lead heading into the two final bouts. Dooley earned his first win of the day to trim the deficit to two, but No. 12 Mason Hawkins earned a pin at 285 to secure the dual win for the Blugolds.
Against Augsburg, Hoerle's major gave Stevens a 4-3 lead after two bouts. Stevens won three of the next four bouts to take a 16-7 lead after Hinojosa's win at 165. Augsburg's No. 1 Solomon Nielsen and No. 4 Nick Rogge scored consecutive tech falls at 174 and 184, respectively, to put Augsburg in front. Dooley's second victory of the day gave Stevens a two-point advantage heading into the final bout, but No. 4 Tyler Kim pinned first-year
Joseph Russell to close out the dual win for Augsburg.
In addition to the three duals, the teams competed in nine extra countable matches.
