Women’s Basketball Tops Arcadia 57-49 in MAC Freedom Opener

Ducks use 15-5 second quarter to win sixth straight

GLENSIDE, Pa. (December 1, 2021)  – Senior Allie Moss scored 14 points and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the line to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 57-49 victory over Arcadia University Wednesday evening in a MAC Freedom matchup at Alumni Gymnasium.

Senior Jess Broad posted her ninth career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Ducks, who won their sixth straight to improve to 6-1 on the year. The Ducks, who also moved to 1-0 in the MAC Freedom, won their conference opener for the eighth straight season.

Scarlett Glasser-Nehls totaled 14 points and four rebounds, while Holly Daveski and Kylie Meredith each came off the bench to score eight points for Arcadia, who fell to 1-4 on the year and to 0-1 in league play. It was the first meeting between the teams since 2014.

After a back-and-forth opening quarter, the second stanza proved to be decisive for the Ducks. Stevens held Arcadia to just five points on 2 for 7 shooting, while forcing 10 Knight turnovers. While the Ducks were clamping down on the defensive end, six student-athletes scored on the offensive end, leading to a 13-point advantage at halftime.

The Ducks scored 15 points in each of the first three quarters and made at least one-third of their shots in each frame. The Ducks finished 23 for 65 from the field, which included a 6 for 14 (42.9%) in the opening quarter.

Stevens forced 21 turnovers, marking the sixth time in seven games that the Ducks forced at least 20. The Ducks turned the 21 Arcadia miscues into 25 points. Conversely, the Ducks committed only 13 turnovers, including just three in the second half. Additionally, Stevens was able to get out into transition, outsourcing Arcadia 16-2 on the fast break.

The decisive Stevens run bridged the first and second quarters. With the teams tied at 12 with a little over a minute left in the opening period, Stevens went on a 12-0 run to break the contest open. A free throw by junior Danielle Cornetta sparked the run and a long three by Moss capped the run midway through the second quarter.

Stevens spoiled any comeback hopes for the home team with a 10-1 run that crossed the third and fourth quarters. Senior Meghan Douglas opened the stretch with a layup and classmate Amber Porrett made a layup to give the Ducks their largest lead of the game at 51-32.

Pivotal Point
  • Cornetta stripped Glasser-Nehls in the final minute of the first quarter and hit a short jumper in the paint to push the Ducks' advantage to three to close out the period.

Inside the Numbers
  • Douglas recorded a pair of blocks.
  • Broad dished out a game-high five assists. As a team, Arcadia only had four.
  • Broad also led both teams with four steals. She ranks second in the conference in blocks and third in steals.
  • The Ducks held Arcadia to just 1 for 10 shooting from behind the arc.
  • Moss' perfect performance from behind the arc moved the Raleigh, North Carolina native into second place in free-throw percentage in the MAC Freedom (89.3%).
  • Although the Ducks held a 12-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, Arcadia finished with a 39-36 margin on the boards.

Unsung Hero
  • Porrett came off the bench to score four points and grab five boards in just 14 minutes.
