HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 3, 2021) – No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling welcomed Alvernia University to Canavan Arena Tuesday afternoon for the final regular season competition of the abbreviated 2021 campaign.

Although team scores were not compiled, all totaled, the Ducks and the Golden Wolves wrestled 18 times, with an additional three matches contested between Stevens student-athletes.

First-year Luke Hoerle led the Ducks' efforts on the mats, scoring a pair of technical falls, to improve to 6-2 in his first season on Castle Point. Classmate Nick Boggiano and sophomore Trevor Mastorio joined Hoerle in posting multiple victories on the day for the Ducks, who were triumphant in 13 of the 18 matches between the schools, with 10 of the 13 coming with bonus points. Sophomore Kyle Slendorn, first-year Will  Fernandez, senior Brett Kaliner and sophomores Pasquale Vizzoni, James Snyder, and Jonah Schechtman each earned one victory, while Vizzoni also received a victory via medical forfeit in his second match of the day. Junior Joe Schneider (twice) and first-year Joel Martsinovsky were also victorious in matches contested solely between Ducks.

"Solid event to close out the regular season," said assistant coach Anthony Bonaventura. "Unique format that allowed us to maximize our matchups with Alvernia and figure out a few weight classes for our lineup. Our guys battled hard for seven minutes and put up a lot of points. It was great to see them execute at a high level with a quick turnaround from Saturday. Excited to continue to build off this performance in preparation for the NWCA National Championships next week."

The day began with a decision win for Kyle Seibert over first-year Andrew Finateri at 125. Hoerle scored the Ducks' first win of the day with a 20-4 tech fall over Louis Larocca. Hoerle quickly scored a takedown for the first two points of the match. After Larocca scored an escape, Hoerle took control of his opponent and quickly scored a second takedown. Working in front of the Stevens bench area, Hoerle continued to build points, culminating in a four-point near-fall right as the first-period buzzer sounded to end the match.

Slendorn, ranked eighth at 141 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) kept the momentum rolling with a first-period pin of Anthony Portillo, which sparked a string of four straight falls for the home team. The Howell, New Jersey native was leading 3-2 at the time of the fall. All totaled, the Ducks earned six pins on the afternoon.

Following Slendorn's win, Fernandez earned his first pin of the season, stopping Corey Jenkins 41 seconds into the second period. Kaliner, ranked first at 149 by the NWCA, then picked up his sixth win of the season with a second-period pin of Jason Rezac. Vizzoni closed out the sequence with his third pin of the year: a third-period stoppage over Brock Drahus.

Two of the three inter-Duck matchups broke the event up. Martsinovsky scored a 12-4 major decision over Nico Ziccardi and Schneider posted a 3-1 win over junior Jarrett Weir with three of the four points in the match occurring in the final minute. Schneider closed out the competition with a 6-4 decision over Snyder in the final bout of the day.

Following the two Stevens-only matches, the intercollegiate competition resumed at 157, where Boggiano scored a 7-2 decision over Gavin Hollingsworth. Schechtman followed with a decision win over his own, coming out on the right side of a 6-3 score over Tanner Vogel. The four 157-pounders would exchange opponents later in the day, with Boggiano scoring a 16-4 major over Vogel, while Hollingsworth earned a 10-1 major over Schechtman.

The Ducks continued their run of bonus-point victories with Snyder earning a hard-fought third-period pin of Ian McCabe. McCabe was leading 8-4 through two periods before Snyder began his comeback in the third. After a restart. Snyder took down his opponent and allowed him to escape. Snyder grabbed McCabe a second time to pull within 9-8 and scored a third takedown in the span of a minute to tie the score at 10. The third takedown led to Snyder ending up in a dominant position, flipping McCabe onto his back for the pin, directly in front of the scorer's table.

Hoerle collected his second tech fall of the day with a 21-6 win over Jenkins, which was followed by the Ducks' final pin of the day with Mastorio stopping Portillo in the first period. Mastorio also earned Stevens' final win of the regular season with a tech fall (16-0 (3:55)) of Drahus.
