READING, Pa. (March 27, 2021) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team swept all six singles flights en route to an 8-1 victory over Alvernia University Saturday in a non-conference match at the Governor Mifflin High School Courts.
After taking two of the three doubles flights, Stevens captured all six singles matches in straight sets to move to 2-0 on the season. It's the second time in the last three seasons that the Ducks have earned wins in each of their first two matches. Alvernia dropped to 0-2. It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
"It was great to get back on the road as a team today," said head coach
Arik Zeevy. "We faced our first adversity of the season, going down 7-0 early at first doubles. Agatha and Gabi fought back to 7-6 before dropping the lone match of the day, but I'm proud of their resilience and [I'm proud] of everyone's performance today in getting the job done."
Stevens jumped out to an early 2-0 lead at doubles. Sophomore
Audrey Heaberlin and senior
Makenna Sargis posted their second straight win, defeating Lily Summerson and Liz Danovich via an 8-0 decision at second doubles. Junior
Alexis Fuda and senior
Chelsea Braithwaite followed with an identical score in their win at No. 3 doubles to give the Ducks their second win of the afternoon.
In the most competitive match of the day, senior
Gabriella Tantillo and junior
Agatha Malinowski rallied from a 7-0 deficit to pull within a single point, before ultimately falling to Alvernia's Leah Burchard and Laura Covely, 8-6, at first doubles. The narrow victory would be the only one of the day for the hosting Golden Wolves.
Heaberlin opened scoring in singles play, topping Covely 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. The Ducks picked up their fourth point of the day at fourth singles, where Sargis bested Jackelyn Checo Mercado, 6-1, 6-0 and clinched the match at third singles, where Fuda earned a hard-fought 6-3, 6-3 victory over Lily Summerson.
Tantillo and Malinowski were impressive in their singles wins at fifth and first singles, respectively, combining to drop only five points to their opponents. Marchisio defeated Leah Kemper 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to provide the final margin of victory.
Up Next: The Ducks welcome Eastern University to Hoboken on Mar. 31 for what is believed to be the first meeting between the programs. The action gets underway at 4 p.m. It is the final non-conference matchup for women's tennis.
