HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 23, 2021) – The Stevens Institute of Technology tennis team continued its torrid start to the season as they earned their fifth consecutive 9-0 sweep to start the 2021 season, defeating Stevenson University Friday afternoon.
The Ducks have now won 10 straight regular season conference contests by 9-0 scores dating back to the 2018-19 season to move to 5-0 on the year. Stevenson, meanwhile, dropped to 3-2 after being swept for the first time this season.
"I'm really proud of how our guys competed today against a tough Stevenson team," head coach
Steve Gachko said. "Most notably, we fought back from two deficits to win decisively in the tie-breaker. Garrett, Mark and Adam all battled well under pressure when it mattered. We are looking forward to facing a very tough DeSales team tomorrow."
The Ducks took all three doubles points by scores of 8-2, 8-2 and 8-7 at flights one, two and three, respectively. After doubles, Stevens dropped their first set of the season but still managed to sweep through the singles competition as
Adam Borowczak won a decisive tiebreaker point 10-3 at line five.
In doubles play, Stevens took the first two doubles by scores of 8-2 as
Aashi Kulakarni and
Marc Feliu won at flight one and
Keegan Morris and
Gabriel Sifuentes grabbed a win at flight two.
The third contest was a closer contest as
Garrett Kincaid and
Mark Pabalan won narrowly 8-7, wining the tiebreak point 7-1.
In singles,
Brian Li got the scoring started for the Ducks at flight six as he grabbed a 6-2, 6-1 victory. He remains unbeaten in singles competition this season with a total set score of 60-5.
Just behind him, Feliu took home a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets victory at line one for his fifth straight win to open the season.
At flight three singles, Morris was also able to win in straight sets as he took home a 6-2, 6-1 win. He is 4-0 in singles play this season and has combined to outscore his opponents 48-7.
Sifuentes was the fourth singles student-athlete to win for the Ducks, winning on line four 6-0, 6-2. The senior from Queens, N.Y. has now won at least one set by a 6-0 score in all four singles matches he has played this season.
Kulakarni also managed to keep his perfect record this season while playing on line three as he took home a 6-0, 6-1 win. He has won 60 of the 69 game points he has competed for on the year.
Flight five was the most highly-contest matchup of the season thus far for Stevens with Borowczak coming from behind to take home a 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 win.
Yet to drop a point this season, Stevens looks to continue it winning streak Saturday as they take on DeSales University in Hoboken at 10:00 a.m. The Bulldogs and the Ducks are the only two unbeaten teams remaining in the MAC Freedom. Live stats and video will be available on StevensDucks.com.
