Men’s Tennis Hands DeSales First Loss of 2021 with 9-0 Sweep

Stevens has now won six straight 9-0 matches to open the season

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 24, 2021) – In a matchup of the last two remaining undefeated teams in the MAC Freedom, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team earned a 9-0 victory over DeSales University for their sixth straight sweep to open the 2021 season.

The Ducks have now won 11 consecutive conference contests 9-0 dating back to the 2019 season as members of the Empire 8 Conference and are 3-0 in the MAC Freedom this season. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, dropped to 6-1 this season and 4-1 in conference play.

"I'm proud of the grit we showed today against a tough DeSales team," head coach Steve Gachko said. "In similar fashion to yesterday, we battled back from down 7-4 in the third doubles and fought back to win in a super breaker at six singles. We are excited to get back to work for the final stretch of conference matches this upcoming week."

At doubles, Stevens earned a pair of wins at flights one and two as Aashi Kulakarni and Marc Feliu won 8-3 and Keegan Morris and Gabriel Sifuentes grabbed an 8-0 win.

Flight three doubles was a highly-contested contest with the Ducks falling behind 7-4 as DeSales looked to take the first point from the Ducks all season. The combination of Garrett Kincaid and Mark Pabalan did not blink, however, as they rallied from behind to win 8-7 (7-5).

In singles play, it was Morris who grabbed the first win of the day for Stevens as he took home his fifth consecutive straight set win of the year. He has yet to lose this season in any competition including singles and doubles play.

Feliu made the score 5-0 as he also grabbed a straight set win at flight one 6-2, 6-1 as he also has yet to drop a set this season. He has now outscored his opponents 72-11 on the year.

Flights three and four were dominant wins for the Ducks as Kulakarni and Sifuentes picked up a perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins. The duo joined Morris and Feliu as Ducks who have still not dropped a set this season.

Adam Borowczak took home a win at flight five in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to give the Ducks sweeping wins in five of the six singles matchups.

In the sixth and final singles contest of the day, Brian Li dropped set one 6-4 and had to battle back to win the second set 7-6 (7-5). In the tiebreak point, Li grabbed a 10-6 victory to clinch the sweep for Stevens.

The Ducks originally scheduled matchup against Misericordia for Sunday has been canceled due to potential poor weather in the area. The next contest for Stevens will be Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. against King's College on the road. Live stats will be available on StevensDucks.com.
