ANNVILLE, Pa. (April 26, 2021) – Senior
Brett Kaliner of the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team was named Wrestling Senior Scholar-Athlete by the Middle Atlantic Conference, the league office announced Monday.
It marks the second straight year that a Stevens wrestler earned one of the conference's highest individual honors after alumnus
Troy Stanich was recognized one year ago.
"Brett continues to be a great example of our program, its philosophies, and the lifestyle we push our wrestlers to live each day," said head coach
Joe Favia. "It is said that high levels of success directly correlate to one's consistency, and consistent is exactly what Brett brings to the table. In his first semester at Stevens he attained a 4.0 GPA and eight semesters later carries a 3.91, all the while developing his craft on the mat twelve months a year. It will be a privilege to have him back for one last run at the ultimate goal."Â
Kaliner posted an 11-1 record in his fourth season on Castle Point and was an All-American for the fourth time, finishing third at 149. Kaliner became the ninth student-athlete in department history to earn four (or more) All-America honors as a Duck. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native has never finished lower than third at the national championship tournament.Â
Over the course of his career, Kaliner is both a three-time regional champion and a three-time conference champion, and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the 2020 Southeast Regional. Over his distinguished career, Kaliner has totaled 114 wins, including 94 with bonus points.Â
In the classroom, Kaliner has earned a 3.91 GPA and was twice recognized as an Academic All-District selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He's also a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-American.Â
A member of Stevens' Pinnacle Scholars program, Kaliner is also an active member of Stevens' Student-Athlete Advisory Council and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.Â
The MAC Senior Scholar-Athletes are traditionally announced after the completion of each sport season. The awards are given to one senior student-athlete from each sport who exhibits top academic excellence and athletic prowess. The MAC Senior Scholar-Athlete Award is based 50 percent on academics and 50 percent on athletic achievements. The award was established prior to the start of the 2000-01 season.
Since joining the MAC for the start of the 2019-20 academic year, Stevens Athletics has totaled eight Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards.Â
