Women’s Tennis Holds Off King’s 6-3 to Remain Perfect in 2021

Ducks move one step closer to regular season title with victory over Monarchs

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 28, 2021)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team remained perfect in 2021 with a 6-3 victory over King's (Pa.) College Wednesday in a MAC Freedom matchup played at Kirby Park.

The Ducks won each of the six contested matches to improve to 6-0 on the year and to 4-0 in MAC Freedom play. Four of the Ducks' six wins have come away from Castle Point and with two additional road matches left of the schedule, Stevens has a chance to win its most contests away from Castle Point since the 2014-15 season.

"I am proud of the team for staying focused and getting another important conference win," said head coach Arik Zeevy. Everyone stepped up today. It was great to see Juliette play a confident match at fourth singles and second doubles."

"I'm really proud of our team today," added senior Makenna Sargis. "We accepted the underdog card of playing a little shorthanded today and had so much to prove, but handled it in the best way that we could. We're looking forward to getting back on the courts on Friday."

King's dropped to 0-8 on the year and to 0-6 in conference play. It was the first meeting between the programs.

The pairing of Sargis and sophomore Audrey Heaberlin moved to 4-0 as a team, with an 8-1 victory over Diana Rodriguez and Addie Atkins. The victory was the first for the tandem in the first position after three wins in the second position.

Playing together as a duo for the first time, senior Gabriella Tantillo and sophomore Juliette Marchisio scored an 8-3 decision at second doubles to give Stevens a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play.

In singles play. Heaberlin slid into the first singles position for the first time in her career and defeated Rodriguez in straight sets (6-1, 6-1). Sargis, who entered the match with five wins at No. 4 singles, moved into the second position, and did not drop a single point in defeating Alexis Zalutko, 6-0, 6-0.

Tantillo moved from her traditional spot at fifth singles into the third position and defeated Braelan Drollas in straight sets.

In the final contested match of the day, Marchisio played at No. 4 singles for the first time in her career and blanked Jackie Costello, 6-0, 6-0.

Up Next: Women's Tennis heads to FDU-Florham on Apr. 30 for a MAC Freedom matchup. The match was originally scheduled for Apr. 17. The Ducks defeated the Devils 9-0 in a non-conference match on Mar. 20. A live stats link is available on StevensDucks.com.
