YORK, Pa. (April 3, 2021) – Senior
Ryan Gebhardt became the sixth student-athlete in program history to reach 200 career points, but the 18th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell to No. 6 York College of Pennsylvania, 14-9 Saturday in a non-conference matchup at Kinsley Field.
Gebhardt netted his 23rd goal of the season midway through the second quarter for his 200th career point, joining alumni
Max Bailey, J.R. Maehler,
Mark Bielicky,
Rich Dupras and John Dolny in reaching the prestigious milestone. The tally also moved the high-scoring attackman to 159 career goals, just five shy of Bielicky atop the career goal-scoring list.
First-year
Jack Savarese netted his fourth hat trick of the season for the Ducks, who fell to 4-2 on the season. The setback snapped Stevens' four-game winning streak.
Dylan Wolf had five goals and a pair of assists for the sixth-ranked Spartans, who improved to 7-0. It was the first meeting between the programs.
"Tough one for us today," said head coach
Gene Peluso. "We came out a lot slower and flatter than we would've liked. When you do that against a great team, it is hard to overcome."
Senior
Ryan Caplis had two goals and an assist for the Ducks, who saw eight different student-athletes find the scoresheet. Senior
Shawn Coulter turned in his second straight two-goal performance and junior
Michael Burns netted his sixth goal of the season to complete the list of goal scorers. Junior
Craig Stockfeder joined first-years
Joseph Grippo and
Nolan Quade in registering an assist to round out Stevens' scoring.
"We did see some student-athletes step up when called upon, which is always a positive," Peluso continued. "But when we finally started to play uptempo and tough lacrosse, it was a little bit late to overcome the deficit."
Senior
Danny Tierney drew the start and made three saves. First-year
Jake Zeyher came on in relief in the second quarter and set a career high for the second straight game, stopping eight shots. Jack Michael made 12 saves to earn the victory for York.
"Hats off to York College and their team and coaches," Peluso commented. "We told the guys to enjoy their weekend and then we start preparation on Monday for a very tough DeSales program."
York got off to a fast start, scoring the first four goals of the contest before Caplis's first of the day put Stevens on the board late in the opening period. The Mooresville, North Carolina native added his second of the day on the man-advantage to pull the Ducks' within three at the start of the second quarter.
Gebhardt registered his milestone goal to pull Stevens within two midway through the second quarter, but York scored the next four goals bridging the second and third periods to reclaim a six-goal margin.
Coulter and Savarese netted consecutive goals to bring Stevens back to within four, but the Spartans put together their second straight four-goal run to take a 13-5 lead in the final stanza.
Savarese scored twice in a 54-second span to complete his hat trick and Coulter converted a Grippo feed and drew the Ducks back to within five late in the final period. Wolf and Burns exchanged goals in the final two minutes to produce the final margin. The 14-goal output for York was its lowest of the season.
York outshot Stevens 43-31 on the day, including a 25-21 margin in shots on-goal. Burns led the Ducks with eight attempts, with Caplis and Gebhardt firing off five each. Will Harnick had eight shots to lead all student-athletes.
The Ducks forced York into 15 turnovers, with Stockfeder, Quade, sophomore
Joe Cawley and graduate student
Daniel Crotty each causing a pair of Spartan miscues. Tyler Nation and Zach Mentzer caused three each to lead York.
Stevens won 14 of the game's 27 faceoffs. Junior
Larry Park had 13 of the Ducks' 14 wins in the 'X,' with first-year
Conner Park earning the team's other faceoff win. Vinny Facciponti had nine wins in the 'X' to lead York.
York held a slim 33-32 advantage in ground balls.
Larry Park led all student-athletes with eight and Crotty picked up five. Facciponti had seven to lead the Spartans.
Stevens scored twice on the man-advantage. Caplis scored his team-leading second power-play goal of the season in the second quarter, while Coulter also scored with the man-advantage in the third. York scored once on their two man-advantage opportunities.
The Ducks were successful on 27 of its 32 clear attempts, while York was 25 for 27.
