AUSTIN, Texas (July 27, 2021) – Stevens Institute of Technology softball student-athlete
Samantha Schattin made history once again and closed out her stellar career in style Tuesday as she became just the second player in program history to be named a First Team Academic All-American as selected by the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A 2021 graduate with a master's degree in mechanical engineering, Schattin joins Christine LaRochelle (2019) as one of just two softball student-athletes to earn the distinguished honor and adds it to the already extensive lists of accomplishments she has on her resume. She becomes the 23rd student-athlete in department history to earn first team honors.
"I am so happy to see Sam earning this type of recognition," head coach
Emily Kaczmarek said. "Her career, both academically and athletically, is arguable the best in the history of the program. This is a remarkable end to an awesome five years. I'm really so proud of her."
The 2021 MAC Freedom Player of the Year and Third Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American, Schattin set single-season program records for batting average (.529) and on-base percentage (.597) this season while also holding the career record for steals and walks. The Princeton Junction, N.J., native hit safely in 28 of the 32 games she played this season and finished the year with more walks (14), doubles (13) and stolen bases (12) than strikeouts (10).
In the classroom, Schattin posted an impressive 3.95 grade-point average with a 3.97 GPA in graduate classes this spring as she was named the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Softball Senior Scholar-Athlete and was also nominated as the Stevens representative for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
The most decorated student-athlete in program history, Schattin closes her career with two conference Player of the Year selections, three All-Conference accolades, two NFCA All-Region honors, two CoSIDA Academic All-District awards and earned MAC Freedom Tournament Most Valuable Player to lead the Ducks to their first-ever conference title.
Schattin joins Spencer Cook men's basketball and Elizabeth Chu of women's volleyball as one of three Stevens student-athletes to earn Academic All-America status for the 2020-21 academic year. All three have landed on the organization's First Team to match the total number of first team selections from 2019-20 and tie an institutional record for the most in any academic year.
