POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (September 11, 2021) – Graduate student
Aris Costeas made one save in his second career start but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team fell to Vassar College 2-0 Saturday in a non-conference fixture at Gordon Field.
Ryan Lane scored twice for the Brewers, who won their third straight to improve to 3-1 on the year, while Stevens suffered its first loss of the season in falling to 2-1-1.
Lane broke through in the eighth minute, knocking home a loose rebound after Costeas deflected Lane's initial attempt. The early advantage would hold into halftime as a positional battle resulted in just five total shots over the first 45 minutes.
Stevens turned on the pressure in the second half, out-shooting Vassar 8-3, although it was Lane that broke through again in the 55th minute, taking a well-placed pass from Brandon Liu and beating Costeas to double the Vassar advantage.
The Ducks threatened late in the match, with senior
Dylan Inguardi and first-year
Zachary Orrico getting scoring opportunities, only to see Vassar goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski thwart each attempt. Wnorowski finished with three saves to earn the victory in goal.
Unsung Hero
- Graduate student Tyler Dressman was the lone field player for the Ducks to play all 90 minutes.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens had a slim 9-7 advantage in shots, with each side connecting for three shots on-target.
- Nine different student-athletes took a shot attempt for the Ducks, while Lane fired off five shots to lead both teams.
- Each side earned four corners. Vassar out-earned Stevens 2-1 in the first half, while the Ducks held a 3-2 advantage in the second half.
- First-year Emerico Vespucci drew his first career start, alongside classmate Luca Campbell.
- Sophomore Adam Cohen made his collegiate debut, as did first-year Terry Thompson and junior Sean Ryan.
- Vassar's victory snapped Stevens' 10-match winning streak in the all-time series. The Ducks still hold a 15-4-2 advantage in the series.
From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan
- "Disappointing start to the game. We came out flat and were punished. Credit to vassar for giving us plenty of problems."
- "Second half, we started well and performed to a better standard, it just wasn't enough to help us get back into the game."
- "We have to recover, refuel, and gear up for another tough opposition on the road tomorrow."
