Men’s Soccer Rebounds with 2-0 Victory over Springfield

Stellar defense and timely goals lead Men's Soccer to victory

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 12, 2021)  – Juniors Fritz Kabeiseman and Emerson Kuzemka found the back of the net and senior goalkeeper Aedan Boriotti turned in his ninth career clean sheet as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Springfield College 2-0 Sunday in a non-conference fixture at Brock-Affleck Field.

Graduate student Grant Conaghan assisted on Kabeiseman's first-half goal for his first collegiate point as Stevens improved to 3-1-1. Clayton Knibbs had three saves for the Pride who saw their record even out at 2-2. The victory was Stevens' third in four all-time meetings between the program.

Kabeiseman put the Ducks on the board just before halftime. After a Springfield foul, Kabeiseman converted a free kick with a right-footed shot to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission. The marker was Kabeiseman's first career goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Ducks worked off another set piece, with Kuzemka heading the ball into the left side of the net for his second career goal to give the Ducks a comfortable cushion.

The rest was up to the defense and Boriotti. The group combined to allow three shots over the final 45 minutes for the Ducks' third clean sheet of the season.

Turning Point
  • In the sixth minute, Springfield's Michael Tocci fired a shot from outside the 18, but the shot rang off the crossbar, keeping the teams scoreless.

Inside the Numbers
  • For the second straight match, Stevens had a slim 9-7 advantage in shots. The Pride entered the match averaging 4.33 goals per match.
  • Five of the Ducks' nine attempts were on frame, while Springfield only had two shots on goal.
  • For the second consecutive match, each side earned four corners, with each side earning two in each half.
  • First-year Zachary Orrico made his first collegiate start, as did Kuzemka.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan
  • "Good response after yesterday's performance - a lot of guys stepped up. It was a nervy start and we could have been down 1-0 after they rattled the crossbar, but we regrouped and put in a better overall performance."
  • "Credit to Springfield for posing a difficult, tactical problem for us. Looking forward to being back on the training pitch this week to prepare for an extremely difficult home match against local rival, NYU."

Up Next
  • Men's Soccer welcomes New York University to the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Sept. 18 for a non-conference fixture.
  • It will be the 12th meeting between the programs since 2002 and just the second meeting in Hoboken since 2013. The Ducks are 5-3-3 in the 11 prior meetings, although NYU won the last meeting 2-1 in double overtime.
