Field Hockey Comes Back to Defeat Misericordia

Julia Zatyko scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining

DALLAS, Pa. (Oct. 1, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team came back from a one-goal deficit to defeat Misericordia University in a MAC Freedom matchup by a score of 2-1 on the road. Junior Julia Zatyko scored the game-winning goal with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
 
The Ducks fell behind after a first quarter goal from the Cougars. Tatyanna Lainez found the back of the net just six minutes into the game and Stevens trailed 1-0. The Ducks put pressure on Misericordia in the second and third quarters but were unable to breakthrough. They outshot the Cougars 5 to 3 in the second and 4 to 2 in the third.
 
Stevens' continued pressure finally paid off in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Makenna Quigley finally broke through to tie the game at one goal apiece three minutes into the fourth. She was assisted on the play by junior Paulina Georgoutsos. The game winner came with five and a half minutes left in the game. Zatyko knocked one past the Misericordia goalie and was assisted by sophomore Emily Smart. The Ducks outshot the Cougars 8-2 in the final 15 minutes and earned five penalty corners.
 
Stevens improved to 6-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play with the win and Misericordia fell to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in conference action.

  • Fifth-year goalkeeper Emily Franco finished the game with four saves.
  • The Ducks led in shots by a total of 18-10 and led in penalty corners by a total of 8-7.
  • Stevens has now won three-straight games over Misericordia.
