Women’s Basketball Tops Moravian in Double Overtime 87-84

Alberici named to All-Tournament Team as three Ducks reach 20 points in victory

YORK, Pa. (November 13, 2022)  – In her first career start, sophomore Lucy Alberici scored a career-high 21 points to lead three players with 20 or more points, as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated Moravian College 87-84 in double overtime Sunday to close out the 15th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, hosted by York College of Pennsylvania at the Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

Junior Elissa Nsenkyire had 20 points and graduate student Jess Broad posted her 13th career double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Ducks, who improved to 2-1.

Morgan Amy had a game-high 24 points and Tessa Zamolyi had 13 points and 14 rebounds to lead Moravian, who fell to 2-1. Sunday's contest marked the first meeting between the programs.

After totaling 36 points and 14 rebounds across two games, Alberici was named to the Coaches vs. Cancer All-Tournament Team. On Sunday, the Hazlet, New Jersey native played a career-high 47 minutes and shot 7 for 12 from the floor.

Stevens successfully forced overtime after overcoming a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit. The Ducks got hot from the floor in the period, hitting half (9) of their attempts (18) from the floor and an impressive seven of their eight attempts from the line. The offensive success down the stretch was matched by the Ducks' defensive efforts that forced Moravian into a 2 for 13 performance from the field. The Greyhounds made 12 of their 17 attempts from the line and appeared set to secure the victory, but Nsenkyire fed Broad for a long three that tied the score at 69. Moravian had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but Amy's three was off target.

Nsenkyire made a pair of free throws to give the Ducks an early lead at the start of the first overtime. The Greyhounds answered with two of their own and would eventually take a three-point lead on a free throw by Emily Markowski. After the Ducks forced a turnover, Broad hit a long jumper to bring them within one with a little more than a minute left in the extra session. Alberici sank a free throw with 26 seconds remaining to again knot the score and send the teams into a second overtime period.

In the second overtime, the Ducks again clamped down on Moravian, holding the Greyhounds to 1 for 10 shooting. Conversely, the Ducks were able to secure the victory by going 7 for 8 from the line. First-year Leyla Castro put the Ducks in front for good after going 1 for 2 from the charity stripe with 37 seconds left. Ashley Robinson missed a layup, which Broad pulled down. Moravian quickly fouled the Morganville, New Jersey native to the line, but Broad was up to the task, making both to give the Ducks a three-point lead. Amy's attempt to force a third overtime was well defended by the Ducks to close out the victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • After a sluggish start, the Ducks finished the game shooting 40% from the floor. Moravian finished with a 31% shooting percentage, but that number included a 5 for 32 (15.6%)  performance from the floor over the fourth quarter and the two overtime periods
  • The Ducks finished with a 59-52 edge in rebounds. In addition to Broad's 12-rebound outing, Castro and graduate student Amber Porrett each snagged 10.
  • Castro and Broad each recorded a block.
  • Nsenkyire was an impressive 7 for 7 from the line and also nabbed three steals.

From the Court - Head Coach Megan Haughey
  • "I thought we fought hard for a full 50 minutes today. We had great offensive production from a variety of players and made our free throws count at the end of regulation and in overtime."
