Women’s Basketball Holds Off TCNJ 63-56 in Home Opener

Broad and Nsenkyire each score a game-high 17 to lead Ducks to victory

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 16, 2022)  – Graduate student Jess Broad and junior Elissa Nsenkyire each finished with a game-high 17 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated The College of New Jersey 63-56 Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at Canavan Arena.

First-year Leyla Castro finished with 12 points as three different players reached double figures for the Ducks, who won their second straight to improve to 3-1.

Nina Branchizio had 13 points and Sydney Blum added eight points and eight rebounds for TCNJ, who dropped to 2-2. The Ducks have won each of the last three meetings between the programs.

After the guests held a slim two-point advantage after the opening quarter, the Ducks increased their offensive output and efficiency, shooting 45 percent or better from the floor in each of the next three quarters. Despite their shooting prowess as the game progressed, it was a perfect 6 for 6 from the line in the final quarter that ultimately proved to be the difference in the contest. As the Ducks were connecting on all of their attempts from the line in the final period, Stevens kept TCNJ off the line entirely over the final 10 minutes.

Another key statistic was three-point shooting. The Ducks made 6 of their 11 attempts from behind the arc (54.5%), while the Lions went 0 for 6 down the stretch and 3 for 14 in the second half. Castro made 2 of her 5 3-point attempts to lead the long-range efforts, while sophomore Lucy Alberici and first-year Olivia Schubiger each connected on their only attempt..

Pivotal Point
  • Trailing by one after a second-chance layup by Katie Fricker, senior Danielle Cornetta moved quickly down the court and scored on a driving layup to put the Ducks back in front (52-51) for good with a little more than five minutes left in regulation.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens finished the game shooting 44.6% from the floor.
  • Behind a career-high matching 13 from graduate student Amber Porrett, the Ducks held a 37-34 edge in rebounds.
  • TCNJ had a 10-8 advantage on the offensive glass, which led to a 10-6 margin in second-chance points.
  • Cornetta matched a career high with six assists to lead all players.
  • Broad had a game-high three blocks.
  • Castro finished a +12, while Alberici was +11.
  • Each side had eight points off turnovers and Stevens had an edge in fast-break points.

From the Court - Head Coach Megan Haughey
  • "I thought we did a great job adjusting at halftime on the defensive end of the floor. Amber was a force on the boards and Lucy continues to fill the stat sheet and do all the dirty work. We focused on stops and controlling the boards in the second half, while working together to get good shots."
