POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (November 13, 2022) – Junior
Alana Schmitt and sophomore
Arianna Daringa each hit the 100 career victories milestone to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team Sunday at the Vassar Invitational.
Schmitt, who began the day five shy of 100 career wins at sabre, finished with 15 wins on the day and Daringa (sabre), who needed seven to reach the milestone, added 13 for the Ducks, who went 2-5 on the day to finish the competition 10-12.
As a team, the Ducks posted victories over Cleveland State (16-11) and Yeshiva (26-1) and fell to several nationally-prominent programs in Northwestern (21-6) and Cornell (24-3). The Ducks also dropped hard-fought bouts with Wellesley (17-10), Sacred Heart (20-7) and Tufts (21-6).
"It was a tough day for our women's team without a couple of our top fencers as we fenced against some of the toughest teams in the country," head coach
Jim Carpenter said. "But our team fought hard throughout the day and were still able to have some good wins."
The sabre group was the top-performing weapon on the day, with the Ducks posting a 33-30 record with wins over Wellesley, Cleveland State and Yeshiva. Foil was a competitive 27-36 across the eight bouts, topping Sacred Heart, Cleveland State and Yeshiva. The epee team scored 14 wins on the day to round out the weapon results.

Ashley McDermott added six and four, respectively. First-year

Annabelle Crescenzo and senior
Brianna Ellis each had three wins at foil to round out their wins on the day.
Senior
Keira Mizzi was the top winner at epee, scoring six wins, while junior
Victoria Beke had three. Sophomore
Renny Victoria and junior
Megha Jain each added two, while first-year
Emily Miller scored her second career victory to cap the epee performances.
In addition to Daringa and Schmitt's performance at sabre, sophomore
Alyssa Ip finished the day with five victories.
The Ducks dropped the first three duals of the day, falling to Wellesley, Sacred Heart and Cornell. After a bye, the Ducks won their sixth straight dual over Cleveland State, using 7-2 scores at sabre and foil to earn the victory. Consecutive 21-6 losses to Northwestern and Tufts followed, before the Ducks closed out the meet with a decisive 26-1 decision over Yeshiva.
