Broad Leads Women’s Basketball Over Montclair State 80-61

Grad student's career day leads Ducks to third straight win

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (November 19, 2022)  – Graduate student Jess Broad poured in a career-high 32 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to an 80-61 victory over Montclair State University Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the Panzer Athletic Center.

Junior Elissa Nsenkyire added 20 points and first-year Leyla Castro totaled 12 points for the second straight game for the Ducks, who won their third straight to improve to 4-1 on the year. With the victory, the Ducks have won each of the last three meetings between the programs.

Nickie Carter and Teresa Wolak each had 18 points to lead Montclair State, who dropped to 2-2. The Red Hawks have alternated wins and losses over their first four contests.

Broad was tremendous in the first half, scoring 20 of her 32 points on 7 for 9 shooting. The Morganville, New Jersey native also went 6 for 7 from the charity stripe in the first half, while also snagging four rebounds and blocking a pair of shots. Broad closed out her career game by scoring 12 points (6 of 8 shooting) and pulling down five rebounds to finish one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season. Her 32-point output surpassed her previous career high of 28 set back in 2018 and is the first 30-point performance since alumna Emily Nunez netted 30 in the Ducks' victory over Drew on Mar. 11, 2021 and marks just the fourth time since 2010 that a Stevens women's basketball player crossed the 30-point mark.

Despite the Ducks' double-digit victory, it was Montclair State that got off to a fast start, going on a 9-0 to take an 11-point lead with a little under four minutes left in the opening quarter. However, the Ducks scored six of the final eight points of the frame to close within seven.

The Ducks carried their offensive momentum into the second period, scoring 10 of the first 13 points of the quarter to draw even at 22. Stevens shot a blistering 60% (9 for 15 in the second quarter and outscored Montclair State 12-0 over a three-minute stretch to take control of the contest. Broad and Nsenkyire each went 3 for 4 in the period, while first-year Olivia Schubiger also made two of her three attempts from the floor. Stevens also went 10 for 11 from the line to take a 42-34 lead into the intermission.

Stevens' hot shooting continued into the second half, as the Ducks nearly matched their second-quarter production, connecting on 10 of their 17 shots, with Broad sinking all five of her attempts. Stevens would open as much as a 15-point lead in the frame after senior Danielle Cornetta fed Broad for a long jumper. Cornetta finished with two assists.

The contest also featured the collegiate debut of first-years Isabella Duval and Sammy Shea. Duval connected on her only field-goal attempt for her first collegiate points.

Pivotal Point
  • Carter made the first of her two attempts from the line to cut the Ducks' lead to four (42-38), 30 seconds into the second half.
  • Cornetta rebounded Carter's missed free throw and the Ducks' next offensive possession resulted in Broad hitting a pull-up jumper to push the lead back to six.
  • The basket sparked the 11-0 run that saw Stevens reclaim its double-digit lead.
  • The streak saw the Ducks score seven of the 11 on three straight baskets - two from Broad and a Castro triple - with Nsenkyire assisting on two of the three buckets.

From the Court - Head Coach Megan Haughey
  • "Jess Broad was excellent on both ends of the floor today. Elissa pushing our pace and playing scrappy was also huge. I thought Lucy was able to come in and provide some key offensive moments for us. I thought that, overall, everyone played a huge part in getting today's win."
