LA CROSSE, Wis. (November 17, 2022)  – Seniors Kyle Slendorn, Hunter Gutierrez and Frank Medina each won their respective bouts, but No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling fell to No. 3 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 25-9 Thursday in a non-conference dual at Mitchell Hall.

Slendorn, Gutierrez and Medina each scored decision victories for the Ducks, who dropped to 1-1 on the year. The hard-fought setback snapped the Ducks' seven-dual winning streak.

The Eagles won seven of 10 bouts to improve to 2-0. Wisconsin-La Crosse has won four straight duals dating back to last season. Thursday's matchup marked the first meeting between the programs.

Slendorn, ranked third nationally at 141, put Stevens on the board with a 6-3 victory over Sam Lorenz. Slendorn outscored Lorenz in the second period 3-0 to secure the win as the Ramtown, New Jersey product kept Lorenz off the scoreboard over the final two periods.

Gutierrez followed Slendorn's victory with a 6-4 win over Parker Kratchovill at 149. After each wrestler scored two points in the opening period - Gutierrez with two on a reversal and Kratchovill on a takedown - the Ducks' 149-pounder scored a takedown of his own and earned a point on a second stall warning against Kratchovill. Gutierrez, ranked 12th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, added an escape point in third to produce the final margin of victory.

Medina scored the final victory of the night for the Ducks, scoring a spirited 10-8 victory over No. 13 Kalyn Jahn. Jahn opened scoring with an early takedown, which led to a four-point near-fall. Medina reversed out only for Jahn to escape. Medina then rode Jahn into the mat for his first takedown of the contest, with Jahn escaping to send the wrestlers into the second period with Jahn holding an 8-4 lead. Medina scored the only points of the second, successfully getting Jahn on the mat with a takedown, while adding two points on a near-fall to send the teams into the final period tied at 8. Medina earned a stalling point against Jahn and earned the riding-time point after amassing an impressive 3:37 on top to secure the victory.

The hosting Eagles built an early lead with 2021 national qualifier, and eighth-ranked, Brandon Murphy scoring a major decision over first-year Vincent Principe at 125. Their lead increased at 133 when Zach Weiler held off a late-charging first-year Nico Diaz 7-5.

A pair of decision victories at 157 and 165 pushed UWL's lead to 13-3. At 157, first-year No. 13 Ryan Smith dropped a 6-2 decision to All-American No.3 Nolan Hertel, while sophomore Harrison Hinojosa fell to Noah Leisgang 8-2.

All-American Seth Brossard, ranked third at 174, scored a 16-1 tech fall over junior Stefan Major, who is ranked second in the weight class. No. 1 Ben Kawczynski topped sophomore Brendan Newbury 11-1 at 197 and graduate student Michael Dooley fell to Mike Douglas at heavyweight to produce the final margin for victory for Wisconsin-La Crosse.
