NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 18, 2022) – Sophomore
Arianna Daringa and senior
Claire McNeill each totaled three wins on the dual, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team dropped a pair of duals Friday evening at the Columbia University Invitational.
Daringa posted a weapon-leading three wins at sabre, while McNeill led the epee squad, but the Ducks fell to No. 3 Columbia, 25-2 and then closed the event with a 20-7 setback to Johns Hopkins, who is ranked second in the United States Fencing Coaches Association's Division III poll. The setbacks left Stevens with a 10-14 record.
As a group, the Ducks posted a 5-4 victory over the Blue Jays at sabre with Daringa and junior
Alana Schmitt each recording a 2-1 record. Two of McNeill's three wins also came against the Blue Jays and moved the fourth-year fencer to within seven of 200 for her career.
"We fought hard tonight, but Columbia is one of the top fencing programs in the entire country, while Hopkins is one of the best in Division III," head coach
Jim Carpenter said. "Very proud of our sabre squad earning a weapon victory over Johns Hopkins."
Sophomore
Alyssa Ip had one to round out the Ducks' victories on the evening.
Up Next: After the winter break, women's fencing returns to the strips for the annual Eric Sollee Invitational on Jan. 29, hosted by MIT.
