Andiamo Andino!! Andino’s Goal Sends No. 4 Men’s Soccer over No. 14 SUNY Cortland 2-1 and into the NCAA Quarterfinals

Ducks advance to NCAA quarterfinals for third time in program history

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 19, 2022)  – Senior Bruno Andino's strike in the 86th minute sent No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer over SUNY Cortland 2-1 Saturday in an NCAA third-round matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

With the teams tied at one, graduate student Adam Silva kept possession for Stevens by winning a ball in the far corner. The Wayne, New Jersey product made a pair of moves to avoid a Cortland defender before touching the ball over to classmate Leo Musacchia, who was just beyond the left corner of the 18. Musacchia received the pass and shuffled it over to sophomore Luca Campbell, who was positioned just inside the 18. Campbell quickly found Andino on the right flank. Andino quickly fired a crossing shot towards the left corner of the goal that froze Cortland netminder Kyle Barsic and found the back of the net. The goal was Andino's team-leading ninth of the season - eight of which have game-winners.

The victory, which moved the Ducks to 17-0-4 on the year, propelled Stevens into the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history and the first since 2011. The Ducks' 17 victories are the most for the team since 2018 and the team's .905 winning percentage is currently the second-best in program history.

Andino's heroics were only possible after junior Fritz Kabeiseman headed home Andino's service in the 52nd minute. Silva drew a Cortland foul along the near-touchline, which led to a free kick. Andino lined up the service and fired it towards the back post. Kabeiseman used his 6-foot-4 frame to get ahead of the defense and headed a ball from well inside the six into the back of the net for his fourth marker of the year.

Stevens will take on 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins University in Sunday's sectional final. The Blue Jays blanked Catholic 2-0 in Saturday's other matchup, with Axel Whamond scoring twice and Alex Morgret making six saves to earn the victory. The Ducks and the Blue Jays have met three times in their history, with Hopkins holding a 2-0-1 lead in the all-time series, although the teams played to a scoreless draw in the third round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, with the Ducks advancing on penalties (2-1).

Senior Justin Cross made four saves to earn the victory for the Ducks, while Barsic stopped two shots in defeat for Cortland. Cortland's season ends with a 13-6-4 record. Stevens is 3-0-1 against Cortland since 2000, with two of the victories coming in the NCAA Tournament.

Matt Shultz broke through for Cortland in the 42nd minute, jumping a clearing attempt and scoring into an open for his 10th goal of the year.

Cortland appeared to have its second goal of the match in the 69th minute, but Mateo Marra's try rang off the crossbar and sailed out of bounds to end the threat.

Unsung Heroes
  • The Ducks' defensive group held Cortland, which entered the match ranked 20th in the country in scoring offense (2.81 goals per match) to just 13 shots, only five of which were on target. The Red Dragons' Jack Coleman, who ranked inside the top-50 in total points, was limited to just two shots.

Inside the Numbers
  • Cortland finished with a 13-11 advantage in shots, including a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. It marked just the third time this season that the Ducks have been outshot.
  • The Ducks had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks, conceding just one in each half.
  • Andino has had at least one point in 14 of his 20 matches, including one in each of his last three contests and four of his last five.
