Men’s Basketball Opens MAC Freedom Play with Wire-to-Wire Victory over Delaware Valley

Coffey leads offense, Spellman with another double-double, as Ducks down Aggies

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (November 30, 2022)  – Senior Conor Coffey had a season-high 20 points and sophomore Jack Spellman recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Delaware Valley 67-50 Wednesday night in a MAC Freedom contest at the James Work Gymnasium.

Junior Mike Goodall had 11 points and six rebounds and first-year Matt Leming came off the bench to sink three 3-pointers for the Ducks, who won their third straight in improving to 3-4 on the year and to 1-0 in league play. The Ducks have won their last six conference openers.

Justin Savage had 13 points and Casey Caruso came off the bench to add 12 for the Aggies, who fell to 3-4 and to 0-1 in the MAC Freedom. Delaware Valley has dropped two straight and has lost all four contested meetings with Stevens.

Coffey was an efficient 9 for 13 from the floor in leading the Ducks in scoring for the second straight game. The Monroe, New York native helped the Ducks open a 14-point halftime lead in the wire-to-wire victory, making six of his eight attempts from the field to score 12 of his 20 points. As a team, the Ducks made (14) over half (27) of their first-half shots in building their lead, while the Aggies could only muster 19 first-half points - with Caruso's five points leading the way.

Stevens used a 10-0 run that bridged the halves to break the game open. Goodall scored on a driving layup to give the Ducks a 27-19 lead to begin the game-changing sequence. The Toms River, New Jersey native then intercepted an Ewans Lizma pass, which led to an easy layup by junior Frank Gelfman. Coffey made it four baskets on four possessions to close out the half with back-to-back layups.

The Ducks closed out the 10-point swing with a layup from senior Brett Bischoping after Coffey nabbed his second steal of the game. The run saw the Ducks swell their lead from six to 16 points, a margin they'd maintain over the remainder of the game.

The Ducks continued their hot shooting over the final 20 minutes, knocking down 12 of their 24 shots to open as much as a 27-point lead. It was Spellman leading the efforts in the second half, scoring 13 points and grabbing six of his game-high 11 rebounds.
