MADISON, N.J. (November 6, 2022) – Senior
Claire McNeill and classmate
Keira Mizzi each recorded double-digit victories to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team to a 4-1 record Sunday to close out the Rangers Fall Invitational, hosted by Drew University at its Simon Forum.
McNeill and Mizzi totaled 11 and 10 wins, respectively, at epee to lead four Ducks in double figures. Junior
Alana Schmitt (sabre) finished with a team-high 12 wins and sophomore
Arianna Daringa (sabre) added 10, marking the third straight double-digit performance for Schmitt and the second for Daringa. The performance also moved both Schmitt (five) and Daringa (seven) within striking distance of 100 career victories.
As a team, the Ducks posted victories over Florida (22-5), Rutgers (22-5), Pittsburgh (22-5) and Lafayette (18-9), with the only setback of the day coming to Long Island University (18-9). The 4-1 mark brought the Ducks to 8-7 on the year, marking the first time the team is over .500 this season.
"Our women's team fenced great today," head coach Jim Carpenter said. "Our only loss today was to Division I LIU - our women are really hitting their stride after a tough opening weekend of the season."
The sabre group was an impressive 33-12 on the day, posting the most victories of the Ducks' three weapon teams. The sabre group posted a 9-0 mark against Rutgers and scored three 7-2 victories. The epee and foil squads posted identical 30-15 marks. All three weapons went 4-1 on the day, with the only setback coming against LIU.
Although the foil group didn't see a double-digit winner, Sophomore
Elizabeth MacDonald and senior
Ashley McDermott each notched eight, with McDermott's coming without a defeat. First-year
Emily Zgombic continued the strong start to her collegiate career with a 7-3 day. Sophomore
Jia Chen ranked third among the sabreists with seven wins, with sophomore
Alyssa Ip adding four. Junior
Victoria Beke (epee) had a season high with five wins as did sophomore foilist
Sofia Savchuk. Sophomore
Renny Victoria registered two wins at epee, while first-year
Emily Miller (epee), junior
Megha Jain (epee), first-year
Amber Muzones (foil) and sophomore
Annabelle Crescenzo (foil) each added one win to round out the Ducks' victories on the day. The victories by Jain and Miller were the first of the season for each respective fencer, with Miller's coming in her first collegiate event. Additionally, senior
Zoe Casten made her season debut.
The Ducks began the day with an impressive 22-5 victory over Florida, marking the fifth straight victory over the Gators. LIU then topped Stevens in the only blemish on the day, before the Ducks topped Rutgers and Pittsburgh by identical 22-5 margins. Stevens has won the last two meetings with the Scarlet Knights, while the contest with Pittsburgh is believed to have been the first meeting between the programs. The Ducks' 18-9 victory over Lafayette, the 10th straight over the Leopards, closed out the event.
