Michael Dooley finished first at 285 to lead No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling to fifth place at the New Standard Corporation Invitational, hosted by York College of Pennsylvania at the M&T Bank Field House.
A total of five Ducks placed at the event, with sophomore
Chris Stathopoulos and senior
Frank Medina finishing second at 165 and 184, respectively. Junior
Joel Martsinovsky came in third at 174 and sophomore
Blaise Wagner placed fifth 174 to round out the place winners. As a team, the Ducks finished fifth in the team standings. No. 17 Johnson & Wales won the team title and the Wildcats' Joziah Fry, who finished first at 125, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Dooley, ranked 12th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Division III Poll, scored four victories on the way to his second tournament title of the season. After an opening-round bye, Dooley scored a 15-1 major decision over Ursinus' Gavin Range, with Dooley building a 14-0 lead through two periods. The Hillsborough, New Jersey native then advanced to the semifinal with an 8-2 decision over Averett's Jamar Christian, scoring four points in the final period to secure the win. Dooley then picked up his second win over USMMA's Reid Garrison this season with a dominant 16-0 tech fall before wrapping up his first-place finish with a 5-0 shutout of Johnson & Wales' Adolfo Betancur. Dooley topped the field at heavyweight earlier this season at the Ned McGinley Invitational.
Stathopoulos had two pins and a pair of decision victories in his march to the 165-pound championship match. The Clifton, New Jersey native opened his tournament with a 9-5 win over Apprentice's A.J. Deutel, and then scored back-to-back pins to reach the semifinals. First, Stathopoulos stopped Ithaca's Carlos Guzman in the second period before pinning Ursinus' Shawn Marchesano in the third. He advanced to the final with a 2-1 victory over TCNJ's Matt Surich, using an escape in the second sudden-victory period to earn the hard-fought victory. In the championship, Stathopoulos met Ithaca's Josiah Gray, falling via a 7-5 decision.
Medina, meanwhile, opened his tournament with a pair of first-period pins. First, the Millington, New Jersey native pinned Averett's Jacob Jiminez 52 seconds into the match for his first win of the day. Medina then pinned Marymount's Eric Washington 2:27 in the match to reach the semifinals. In the semis, Medina picked up his fourth decision win of the year with a 9-3 victory over Washington & Lee's Cam Blizzard, picking up four points in the final period to clinch the win. Medina dropped a spirited 15-8 decision to Johnson & Wales' Ryan DeVivo in the final.Â
Martsinovsky continued the strong start to his season, picking up five victories en route to a third-place finish, with all five coming with bonus points. The Richboro, Pennsylvania native opened his tournament with a 13-2 major decision over TCNJ's Jake Gerish before dropping to the consolation bracket with a 9-4 decision loss to Wagner. Martsinovsky quickly bounced back with consecutive tech falls over Ursinus' Jackson Brandt (19-4) and Brockport's Jared Zenie (19-1). Martsinovsky then continued his dominant run through the consolation bracket with back-to-back first-period pins to close out his day.
Wagner was the final placer for the Ducks, scoring three decision victories en route to a fifth-place finish. The three victories brought his season total to eight.
At 125, first-year
Vincent Principe picked up his second pin of the year with a first-period fall over York's Luke Ragusa. The Millstone Township, New Jersey native picked up his second pin of the day with a first-period fall over Ursinus' Will Schwartz in his first bout in the consolation bracket and added a 10-2 major decision over Ithaca's Matt Haycook before falling to No. 12 Jared Kuhns of York to bow out of the tournament.Â

Anthony Bistany made his collegiate debut with a pair of decision wins of his own at 133, before both student-athletes fell out of the event. First-year

Jack Bailey pinned Ursinus' A.J. Cerulli at 165, senior
James Snyder had three bonus-point wins at 165, first-year
Armaan Khatri earned a default win at 174, sophomore
Brendan Newbury had four wins at 184 to move his season win total to 11 and sophomore
Max Ruiz had three wins, two with bonus points, at 197 to round out the Ducks' wins across the two-day tournament.
Up Next: No. 5 Wrestling returns to the mats one week from today on Dec. 10 for a triangular with Messiah and Delaware Valley in Canavan Arena. The three-team event will be the first on-campus wrestling matches contested in front of fans in Canavan Arena since February of 2020.
