HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 6, 2021) – Thirteen student-athletes won at least one match as No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing split with Army and the New Jersey Institute of Technology Sunday at the annual Stevens Invitational. The Ducks defeated Army 19-9 to open the annual event before falling to the Highlanders 17-10. The event was the program's first home event since Feb. 9, 2020.

Kiera Barnes led the way with six wins, while classmates

Megha Jain in adding one. Prior to the matches, the women's fencing program recognized its senior class.
"It was a great day for women's fencing," said head coach
Linda Vollkommer-Lynch. "We honored our seniors, got to see them in action, and we had an exciting win for our sabre group."
The Ducks began the day with a 19-8 victory over Army. Stevens scored a 7-2 victory at both sabre and foil, while posting a narrow 5-4 win at epee. Wissemann, Barnes, Daringa and Gellerstein posted sabre victories against the Black Knights, while Kubit, Yu and Persau accounted for the foil wins. Victoria, Chan and Mizzi totaled the epee wins, with Chan posting a 5-0 victory in the final epee bout to close out the victory. Wissemann's 5-0 victory in the opening sabre bout was the Sayville, New York native's first action of the year. Stevens has won the 20 meetings between the programs.
Against the Highlanders, the Ducks opened the dual with a 6-3 victory at sabre. Barnes won all three of her matches, while Schmitt went 2-1 as the Ducks secured the weapon with five straight wins. NJIT won eight of the nine bouts at foil and six of the nine epee bouts to claim the dual. The Highlanders have won each of the last three duals between the programs.
The split left the Ducks with a 20-9 record in the year.
Up Next: Women's fencing heads to Teaneck, New Jersey on Feb. 13 for the Fairleigh Dickinson University Invitational. The Ducks will fence eight opponents in the final event of the regular season.
