Women’s Basketball Falls to Wilkes on Senior Day

Douglas nets a career high, but Ducks can't overcome slow start in falling to Colonels

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 19, 2022)  – Senior Meghan Douglas finished with a career-high 16 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to Wilkes University 50-47 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior Keeley Coval added 12 points in her first collegiate start and senior Vanessa Elliott chipped in with seven points and a pair of rebounds for the Ducks, who fell to 17-6 on the year and to 12-4 in conference play. Stevens is locked into the second seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament and will host Lycoming at Canavan Arena Wednesday night. The Ducks' 12- league wins matched the team's total from the 2018-19 season.

Erin Shober finished with 10 points and Brianna Horton chipped in with nine points and six rebounds, while playing all 40 minutes, for Wilkes, who closed the regular season 8-14 overall and 7-9 in league play. The victory propelled the Colonels from the seventh seed into the fifth seed, where they'll face Misericordia in Dallas, Pennsylvania on Feb. 23.

A furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short for the Ducks, who trailed most of the contest, before outscoring Wilkes 19-8 in the final period. Coval and Douglas led the way offensively in the final period, combining to score 17 points on 6 of 8 shooting, including three Coval three-pointers, which allowed Stevens to have a chance to force overtime on its final possession.

The Ducks' defense was splendid in the final period, keying the comeback bid by forcing nine Wilkes turnovers. After averaging more than 13 shots over the first three periods, the tightened Stevens defense allowed just six shots in the final 10 minutes to the Colonels. While the defense clamped down on the Colonels, the Ducks' offense heated up as Stevens shot 43% from the floor, nearly making as many baskets as it had over the first three quarters.

Stevens had a chance to force overtime, getting the ball back after a Wilkes shot clock violation with 3.6 seconds left in regulation. Senior Jess Broad fed classmate Allie Moss for a left-wing three, but the shot was blocked by Julia Marino, allowing Wilkes to escape with the victory.

Prior to the contest, the program recognized its six-person senior class in a pregame ceremony that featured tributes to each student-athlete, written by a teammate.
