No. 6 Men’s Volleyball Downs No. 11 Stevenson and Widener to Push Winning Streak to 10

Fyda totals 28 kills to lead Ducks to 10th straight win

CHESTER, Pa. (March 19, 2022)  – Graduate student Jack Fyda totaled 28 kills over two matches to lead No. 6 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball to victories over No. 11 Stevenson and Widener Saturday in a Middle Atlantic Conference tri-match hosted by the Pride at the Schwartz Center.

First-year Koby Sherman totaled 16 kills across the two matches and junior Percy Bickford added 13 for the Ducks, who defeated the Mustangs in four sets (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21) before sweeping Widener (25-23, 25-16, 25-13) to finish play 21-3 and a perfect 8-0 in league play. Dating back to last season, the Ducks have won 17 straight league contests. The four-set win over the Mustangs in the opener moved Stevens to 10-1 all-time against Stevenson, while the Ducks moved to 3-0 all-time against Widener.

Tanner Stauffer had 13 kills and four aces against the Ducks to pace Stevenson, who swept Widener in the first match of the day, to conclude play 17-7 overall and 7-1 in MAC contests. Matthew Christ had eight kills against the Ducks to lead Widener, who dropped to 5-10 on the year and to 1-7 in conference play. With five games left on the conference schedule, the Ducks sit atop the standings, two games ahead of Messiah. The teams will face off against one another on Apr. 2 in the regular-season finale (hosted by Arcadia), however, the Falcons have a key contest at Stevenson on Mar. 23.

Fyda was incredibly efficient on the day, knocking down 15 kills on 31 swings with just three errors (.387) in the win over Stevenson and then setting down 13 kills on 19 swings with just two errors in the sweep of Widener. All totaled, Fyda hit .460 on the day and the graduate student ranks seventh in the conference in hitting percentage and 11th in kills per set.

Stevens and Stevenson engaged in an entertaining contest that produced a total of 13 lead changes and 31 ties. The play was especially tight in the final set, where the teams tied 11 times. The second contest, while competitive, only produced eight lead changes over the three sets.

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks' 47 kills against Stevenson were the team's sixth-highest total this season, although two of the five larger totals took place in five-set matches.
  • Stevens had exactly nine blocks in each match. Junior Chris Varseveld and Sherman finished with four blocks each against Stevenson, while seniors Zachary Evans and Stedman van Arsdale joined junior Alex Franke in totaling two apiece against Widener.
  • The Ducks received double-digit digs from their libero in each match. First-year Jesse Knuckles recorded 11 against the Mustangs, while sophomore Carver Weirick had 10 in the victory over the Pride. The Ducks currently rank second in the conference with 9.74 digs per set, with Knuckles ranking fifth with 2.16 per set.
  • Stevens forced Stevenson into nearly committing as many errors (32) as kills (38). The Mustangs finished with a negative hitting percentage (8-10-27) in the second set. Stevens has held 11 opponents under .100 this season.
  • Junior Louden Moran dished out 40 assists against Stevenson - his fourth match with 40 or more assists this season. Moran also handed out 13 assists in the opening set against Widener.
  • Fyda served up four of the Ducks' seven aces on the afternoon.
  • The Ducks had eight solo blocks against the Pride and finished with 10 solo blocks over the two matches.
  • Sophomore Phu-Quy Ho was credited with a kill against Stevenson - the third of his career. Ho joined junior Connor Feulner (3-0-3 against Widener) in producing perfect hitting percentages.

Unsung Hero
  • Senior Colin Nikc came off the bench against Widener and finished with 20 assists. With the Manorville, New York native at the helm, the Ducks hit .360.

Up Next
  • No. 6 Men's Volleyball welcomes Misericordia to Canavan Arena on Mar. 23 for a conference matchup.
  • The Cougars are currently tied in the league standings with Alvernia at 4-4, although the Golden Wolves hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and would play at Arcadia in the "Play-In" game if the season ended today.
  • The Ducks are 3-1 all-time against the Cougars, including a sweep in Dallas on Feb. 2.
